Asked by Darshan Singh Sahri

I am a novice trying to have a dual boot on my Dell desktop runing on Vista. I have tried to install ubuntu 7.10 using the install disk boot from my cdrom. All but the last step work fine. At the end the program asls me to restart my computer. When I try to reboot, the computer shows some activity and then locks with the following message:

                                     Out of Range
                                     H: 83.2 kHz
                                     V: 78.5 Hz
                                     Max: 1280X1024

I have re-tried with different display resolutions bot no luck Any help will be gratefully acknowledged.

With best wishes for the new year.

The out of range message you see is from the monitor itself not the computer. This indicates that no video is being outputted at all.

Few questions.

Do you see the grub boot loader?

Can you still boot into Vista fine?

Did you install from the Live Desktop CD or the Alternate CD, ie did you have a normal desktop when booting the cd or a text based install?

Does your computer have more than one location where you can plug in the monitor? If you have two, try the other port.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your prompt interest in my problem. Here are the aswers to your
questions as I can understand them:

I don't see a grub boot loader

I can boot into Vista fine.

To make te installation disc I downloaded ubuntu 7.10 Desktop iso file from
an ububtu site. As directed, I burnt it using Roxio program to make an
installation CD. From this disc I have been able to run a reduced version
of ubuntu before ny problem appeared.

If grub is needed I would like to know how to get it without having to work
with its code . Is there an easier way ?

For LCD terminals like mine, there is only one place in my Dell computer to
connect. The display works fine with Vista and Unix Shells

As I said I am a novice and ignorant of useful Linux secrets.

Best regards.

The problem is solved by restarting in the safe mode. Just before the 'out of range' message appears there is flash asking us to press the ESC key to open a menu. The menu has a choice to reboot in the safe mode.

ububntu was running from the disk. Next step was to install it on the computer. . When this process started, some initial processin took place and the screen asked me to reboot. I used to have trouble at this stage i e. computer would freeze, showing 'out of range' message. Last time I pressed Esc just befre the 'out of range' message could appear. It gave me menu with a choice for safe rebotin. I chose safe mode abd ubuntu started installing on the computer hard disk.
