relicense as LGPL or other?

Asked by Christopher DeMars

I am interested in using CBC.PDESys as the basis for a large integrated hydrologic model. I notice that the license is GPLv3, which would require any program that used CBC.PDESys (without modification) would require being licensed by the same GPLv3. The FEniCS group has relicensed their stuff in LGPL which should allow such use by non-GPLv3 code (BSD, MIT, Apache, proprietary, other). Would you concider changing the CBC.PDESys license to LGPL to match the main FEniCS code base?

I'm getting public funding for the project, so the final license will be some variation on a FSF friendly license, but my sponsoring agency tends to use the more permissive licenses (BSD, MIT, Apache) and shys away from GPLv3.

Thanks for your concideration,
--Christopher

Hi Christopher,

Thanks for your interest in using CBC.PDESys. Sorry about the late reply, had to check out a few facts. You are quite right, FEniCS has changed to LGPL and so should CBC.PDESys. I will make the necessary changes and resubmit under the LGPL flag.

Best regards

Mikael
