Bzr release planning in Lucid/LTS

Asked by Romain Chalumeau

Hi all,

We have migrated all our development platform to Ubuntu LTS Lucid.
We are of course using intensively Bzr.

Yet, lucid seems to be frozen to bzr 2.1.1 when the news announce 2.3 stable release delivery.

So is there any plan to deliver bzr evolutions to lucid release,
and more generally, what are the plans for LTS versions.

Thx and rgds,
Romain

The answer is two-fold:

- we provide lucid versions of bzr and plugins for the latest stable versions (2.3.1) in the stable PPA: https://launchpad.net/~bzr/+archive/ppa?field.series_filter=lucid

- we plan to do SRUs to bring 2.1.4 to lucid, but we must do it for 2.2 (maverick) first

The priority is to maintain the PPA as we think it provides a better end result (some bugs will never get fixed in old series: 2.0, 2.1, 2.2).

As far as I understand LTS releases are not intended to be updated with
new major releases of software (except perhaps for really special
circumstances).

Important bug fixes are backported to the bzr 2.1 series and uploaded to
Lucid.

It might be possible to get a backport of bzr 2.3 into the Lucid
backports. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports for
details.

Cheers,

Jelmer

OK, thx, i understand about the major releases and i'am fine with this policy.

Yet, regarding the 2.1 serie, I can notice that is available in downloads a 2.1.3 version.
Initial bzr release (2.1.1) was available in "main" apt policy.

So, from what i understand, the fixes are available in ppa sourcelist, but won't be put on lucid main repository ?
Does it mean that i have to inform my sysadmins to change the sources to include ppa bzr to get the fixes in 2.1 serie ?

Thx for your support,
Romain

Sorry Vincent, I may not have understand the your answer, and that was what you called 2.1.4 as a SRU (main policy ? )

Hi Romain,

We are going to do SRU updates of these packages into Lucid. The current state and our plans are described on <http://wiki.bazaar.canonical.com/UbuntuStableReleaseUpdates>.

At the moment we are waiting on 2.2.4 to be uploaded into maverick.

There's now an updated bzr package in lucid-proposed. Please, test it out and let us know if there are or aren't any problems.
