Bug Description

With Metacity I can righ-click on Gnome (fallback) panel and add applets, but that doesn't work if I run compiz instead of Metacity.

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 11.10
Package: gnome-panel 1:3.2.0-0ubuntu1
ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.0.0-12.20-generic 3.0.4
Uname: Linux 3.0.0-12-generic i686
NonfreeKernelModules: openafs
ApportVersion: 1.23-0ubuntu4
Architecture: i386
Date: Thu Nov 17 17:02:55 2011
InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 11.10 "Oneiric Ocelot" - Release i386 (20111012)
ProcEnviron:
 LANGUAGE=en_US:en
 PATH=(custom, no user)
 LANG=en_US.UTF-8
 SHELL=/bin/bash
SourcePackage: gnome-panel
UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install)

-----

Workaround:
Instead of holding Alt and right clicking to edit the panel, hold Alt+Super and right click. With the addition of the Super key, Compiz itself ignores the event.

A workaround is to use Super+Alt+rightclick combination instead (Super is usually a windows-logo key).

This is because the Alt-key + mouseclick is used for moving and resizing windows.

You can change Compiz to use the Win-key instead of the Alt-key.

gconftool-2 --set --type string /apps/metacity/general/mouse_button_modifier '<Super>'

Compiz should only grab input for the alt key in combination with the left mouse button, and not with the right mouse button. If this were done correctly there would not be a conflict, and "Alt-Right Click" would still work with the panel, at the same time that "Alt-Left Click" is used for window moving.

Can anybody please check if it's still an issue in Ubuntu 12.10 (where all these settings have been moved to GSettings)?

That version has reached EOL since a while, so it will not receive update. If that issue still exist, report again using ubuntu-bug.

AFAIK, you should instead use the "Incomplete" bug status in such cases (in 60 days of inactivity it automatically gets "Expired"): https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Bug%20statuses
