Bug Description

Hi,
  I've got a Radeon HD4350 and on Maverick most 3d games (assaultcube for example) and Google Earth are badly flickering
and misrendering. I asked on xorg-driver-ati :

http://lists.x.org/archives/xorg-driver-ati/2010-August/016927.html

and Michel Dänzer was good enough to suggest a patch which is in the current mesa git tree
646d2e9fbc41bf49075013009e9583bec4a51168

I pulled this and applied it on top of 7.8.2-2ubuntu2 and it does seem to fix the problem; so I ask that you bring this in - it
makes the difference between assaultcube being unplayable and googleearth being very annoying, to both of them acting as normal.

The diff goes in reasonably easily (I seem to remember there is a patch to one file that isn't in the 7.8.2 version - I just ommitted that).

There is a ppa of the build currently cooking at:
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-treblig/+archive/mesafiddle/+packages

(Note for google-earth you have to update the ia32-libs as well, or if you're doing it by hand copy in the libGL and the dri directory in /usr/lib32 )

Attached lspci -vvnn but hey, this bug is pointing to a specific fix that needs to be pulled in so it's not really relevant.

mesa package proposed by Dave Gilbert solved this bug #610541 (without having to add xorg-edgers repository)
(opengl apps don't flicker anymore !)

This is also fixed by sarvatt/mesa ppa with the package versions 7.9~git20100909-0ubuntu2~lp631413

mesa (7.9~git20100909-0ubuntu1) maverick; urgency=low

  [ Robert Hooker ]
  * New upstream git snapshot up to commit 94118fe2d4b1e5 (LP: #631413)
  * New features include ATI HD5xxx series support in r600, and a vastly
    improved glsl compiler.
  * Remove pre-generated .pc's, use the ones generated at build time
    instead.
  * Remove all references to mesa-utils now that its no longer shipped
    with the mesa source.
  * Disable the experimental ARB_fragment_shader option by default on
    i915, it exposes incomplete functionality that breaks KDE compositing
    among other things. It can be enabled via driconf still. (LP: #628930).

  [ Christopher James Halse Rogers ]
  * debian/patches/04_osmesa_version.diff:
    - Refresh for new upstream
  * Bugs fixed in this release:
    - Fixes severe rendering corruption in Unity on radeon (LP: #628727,
      LP: #596292, LP: #599741, LP: #630315, LP: #613694, LP: #599741).
    - Also fixes rendering in gnome-shell (LP: #578619).
    - Flickering in OpenGL apps on radeon (LP: #626943, LP: #610541).
    - Provides preliminary support for new intel chips (LP: #601052).
  * debian/rules:
    - Update configure flags to match upstream reshuffling.
    - Explicitly remove gallium DRI drivers that we don't want to ship.
  * Update debian/gbp.conf for this Maverick-specific packaging
  * libegl1-mesa-dri-x11,kms: There are no longer separate kms or x11 drivers
    for EGL, libegl1-mesa-drivers now contains a single driver that provides
    both backends.

Yep, fixes rendering issue for me - but ia32-libs needs a rebuild to pick it up, and hence google-earth on 64bit still suffers from this.
Added ia32-libs to bug.

I'm not going to have a chance to try it again until the weekend. However,
ubuntu6 was good for me last weekend.

I've just installed Maverick on my desktop and have flickering as described here every few seconds on a totally clean installation. Changing resolution, frequency or "Visual Effects" setting doesn't help. My GFX card is an ATI Radeon X1600.

Either this bug was not properly fixed and has resurfaced or a very similar bug has disappeared.

Here, on my family's pc, the monitor is still heavily flickering, very,very annoying.. :\
The problem doesn't depend on compiz.
Ubuntu Maverick fully updated, no external ppa added.

Please note this bug is not a general bug about flickering.
This was a particular problem that is now no longer present in Maverick.

If you are seeing flickering please file a separate bug describing your hardware.
