Bug Description

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Ubuntu 10.04 - Rhythmbox Unable to Play Music from daap share that requires password

Clean install of Ubuntu 10.04.

$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS
Release: 10.0

Installed mp3 plugin (at I believe Rhythmbox prompt) when trying to first play an mp3 file. File played fine.

Two NAS boxes on network:

 1) NAS1 - Dlink DNS-323, firmware 1.08

 2) WD1 - Western Digitial MyBook World Edition - firmware 01.01.16 with MioNet 4.1.1.9

Both have built in daap (itune) servers. Both of these servers and their music files can be seen and played under Windows Vista and Windows 7 using either itunes or songbird (with the daap plugin). The NAS1 daap server is setup so that it requires a password to access the server. Both itunes and songbird prompt for this password. WD1 does not require a password.

In Ubuntu 10.04 both NAS1 and WD1 appear in Rhythmbox under "Shared". However, Rhythmbox could only list and play tracks from WD1. There was no password prompt box when connecting to NAS1. No error message was reported when trying to open NAS1 just no tracks appeared.

Q1) How can I get Rhythmbox to prompt for the NAS1 daap share password?

To investigate further I installed the Banshee music player. Initially this could not see either NAS1 or WD1.

After a google search I edited the file: /etc/samba/smb.conf

and adding in the [global] section after the line "server string = %h server (Samba, Ubuntu)"

  client ntlmv2 auth = no

Now Banshee was able see and connect to both WD1 and the DNS-323 daap server, it prompted for the password when connecting to NAS1. I was able to play music from both WD1 and NAS1.

The behaviour with Rhythmbox was unchanged, still no password prompt when connecting the NAS1 daap share.

Could be very similar to:
#230583 connecting to daap share fails to ask for required password
reported for Ubuntu 8.04. The problem here was on 10.04 and the daap share was automatically found by Rhythmbox, but it could not connect to it, apparently due the lack of password prompt.

I will also report the Banshee samba issue as a separate bug.

The Banshee not being able to connect to a daap share with the default samba configuration does already appear to covered by:

I have reported by workaround for this issue as a comment on that bug page.
