Bug Description

Binary package hint: util-linux

Floppy media recognition was broken in 9.10
This appeared to have been fixed in 10.04 (though I had to add this line to fstab:"/dev/fd0 /media/floppy0 auto rw,user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0", and add a directory for the mount point)
This worked for a while, but yesterday I had to read a floppy, and the system is again failing to recognize the media.
Clicking on "Detect Media" in Nautilus spins the disk for a few seconds, but never lets me mount the disk.
Disk Utility claims "No Media Detected".

I was able to read the floppy on another Ubuntu system, that is a 32 bit system that has bugs in the display driver, so it is pretty much a clean install since the display driver bugs make it unusable. I updated that system to the latest code before attempting to read the floppy.

Laurence Nagel usefully told me:
1. Allow yourself to use the floppy by going to System->Administration->Users and Groups->Advanced Settings->User Privileges and click on "Use floppy drives"

2. Use the old version of udisks () by going to System->Administration->Synaptic Package Manager, find the udisks package, mark udisks for reinstallation, click on Package->Force Version, and select the 1.0.1-1build1 version (which is the old version). Then click on apply to finish the installation.

3. Remember to unclick udisks whenever Update Manager wants to install new updates, or you'll get the new version and floppy disks won't work anymore!

After the old udisks is installed (and the machine is rebooted), when you insert a floppy a cute little icon comes up on the desktop and in Nautilus (and on Disk Mounter if you have that installed). Left clicking on the icon and select Mount Floppy Disk will put an icon in Nautilus, and then you read, write, and format the floppy just like any other drive.

To which I will add:
Package>Force Version
will prevent it being over-ridden.

As the French say : Le canard est toujours vivant !
In other words, this bug still confirmed.

Sorry, but for anyone who wanted to switch from Windows to "Linux for human beings" this bug can be a reason to not even attempt any further use of Ubuntu.

What kind of "operating"(?) system" is not even capable to read or write a floppy ?
Do users have to improvize turnarounds for something that should run normally ?!

Every time I go to use the floppy disk, I find it broken and need to hack my system to fix it.

I just did a clean install of 11.04, and the first thing I found was that, as Ian pointed out, my user did not have permission to access the floppy drive. But giving my user access did not solve the problem. I am unable to downgrade udisks because the package->force version is grayed out, and I can't figure out a way to let synaptic know about older versions.

Could this PLEASE be one of the things that is always tested on every version update?

If you are still having this problem in 12.04+, please provide the output of udisks --dump. Also is this an internal floppy or a usb floppy?

affects: util-linux (Ubuntu) → udisks (Ubuntu)

Yes this problem still exists in 13.04.
It is an internal floppy.

I have been using the following work around:

comment out floppy line in /etc/fstab
sudo mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /media/floppy0
read/write floppy as needed
before removing floppy:
sudo umount /media/floppy0

Can you run udisks --mount /dev/fd0?

So running udisks --mount works, but clicking on the icon in nautilus does not?

Nautilus? Nautilus removed so many features I used I switched to Nemo.
Nemo does not show any floppy Icon.
I ran Nautilus and yes, clicking on the icon brought up the directory of the floppy, so I guess that is working now.
Interesting, now after clicking on the floppy icon in Nautilus, there is an icon in Nemo.
