not reproduced with Inkscape 0.47+devel r9300 on OS X 10.5.8:
double-clicking a path in the node-editor inserts a node as expected.

Please provide more information about platform and bzr revision. Can you narrow it down to a certain revision or a range of revisions (i.e. worked in r92xx, no longer works in r92yy)?

Can you check if the path was drawn in 'Spiro' mode / has the 'Spiro spline' path effect applied? (in this case you have to turn on 'Show the outline of the path' in the node tool and double-click on the highlighted outline, not on the representation of the spiro spline, to add a node)

I have just compiled Inkscape 0.47+devel r9303 on my Ubuntu 9.10 (i386)
and the problem still occurs.

I can't specify the range precisely, but I noticed this problem last
week for the first time. I checked Inkscape 0.47 r22583, which
is available in Ubuntu repository and everything works well - nodes
can be inserted by double-click.

All the tests I have made was performed on a regular path - not shape,
nor spiro spline.

@dopelover - can you test the current build with default preferences (temporarily rename or move ~/.config/inkscape/preferences.xml) to rule out possibly conflicting preference settings for the new node tool?

@JazzyNico, ScislaC - do you have the same problem inserting new nodes with a double-click on Ubuntu?

No problem on Ubuntu 9.10, Inkscape r9303. I can insert a node in all tested path (regular, converted from shape...) by double-click.

I removed preferences.xml and that solved the problem.

Can you please attach the faulty preferences file?

This is the faulty file.

For testing I had to remove the configuration settings for the 'Wacom Bamboo' tablet from your settings file (no extended input device available here) and failed to reproduce the issue: adding nodes still worked by double-clicking the path in the node editor (Inkscape 0.47+devel r9300 on OS X 10.5.8).

Can someone test with a tablet if possibly conflicting snap or node-editing settings prevent adding nodes with the pen?

Could this be similar or related to <http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.graphics.inkscape.user/13251> (fixed in r9219)?

I marked this bug as Invalid since we know this was a problem caused by faulty preferences file.

Changed in inkscape:
status: New → Invalid

I'm not sure where the bug really is (faulty preferences file written or tablet settings incorrectly saved): the same problem with inserting nodes was mentioned in a more recent report about tablet configuration settings not fully saved:
