Bug Description

Screen resolution has been corrupted in Kubuntu/Ubuntu 6.06 alternate after last upgrade.

The installation has been working very well since June 02,06.

Display settings cannot be changed.
After logging in, desktop appears extremely large(640x 480) and it extends beyond the edges of the monitor screen.

At the same time it can be moved to the left if the mouse points to the right edge, or to the
right when mouse is moved to the left edge
The same effect occurs in the vertical position.

DISPLAY SETTINGS
There are only two choices supported in the display settings menu: 640x480 and 1280x1024, which are marked as default.
800x600 and 1024x768 are not included.
It is impossible to change the settings. The screen stays at the low resolution.
At the same time both horizontal and vertical sync are lost after moving the desktop up and down
or left and right, with the mouse pointer.

It seems that this condition appeared after an ugrgade of nine packages which included an upgrade of Firefox to version 1.5.0.4.,today June 09,06, and when I logged out and rebooted.

A similar installation in another Hard Disk, used for testing, works without any problems (last 9 upgrades have not been installed here)

marcris - this bug also occurs for me with a new install of Dapper on my desktop (nvidia geforceFX5200) but not with the same install CD on my laptop(ATI). No special action needed to reproduce; thats just how ir starts up.

Correction of the last two lines on bug # 49188.

The same bug has now appeared on the other Hard Disk, ( used for testing), today June 10,06.
-The last 9 upgrades have not been downloaded on this installation of Dapper 6.06 LTS.
-Firefox has not been upgraded to v 1.5.0.4
-This disk dual-boots another Linux flavor which has no problem with the screen resolution.

Some steps taken which improved the situation:
-1)The system went into an automatic system file check and found some corrupted files. It suggested running fsck manually.

-2)After running fsck and fixing all corrupted files, I rebooted.

3) Opening the Display Settings I found out I could reset my resolution.
The only choices were 640x480 and 1280x1024 and the lower setting worked normally.

Going to the high resolution (1280x1024) resulted in the weird situation as before, when the desktop can be moved around with the mouse pointer and its dimentions are extremely high.

I am not sure what caused the file corruption. It may be something I did.
But the problem with the display settings remains to be solved.
Sorry if my bug is a false alarm, but could somebody help with my problem?

It will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

June 12,06: Problem solved.

At the risk of being boring, I am coming back to the subject hoping that it may help other people with the same problem.
My bug report is a duplicate of bug #31830, apparently.
And the solution was a result of the tip below, posted by Ricardo Perez Lopez, whom I would like to thank.

May I quote you Ricardo?
Here it is:
"If I do "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg", and follow the steps, I finally have a configuration that works perfectly, with 1024x768, 800x600 and 640x480 resolutions available. I attach the xorg.conf file generated by the "dpkg-reconfigure" execution"

Well, I did follow this tip, and I did get the desired resolutions (1024x768, 800x600, and 640x480).
As a matter of fact, I even have the correct size of my monitor screen which was smaller by about two centimeters all around before.
    Thank you Ricardo. Good work!

Credit and thanks should also be given to Rich Johnson of the Ubuntu support team for his quick response to my request for help (request # 1038).
His tips are similar, and choice # 1 works well. I didn't know that the solution was so easy.

Below are his instructions, if I may quote him. And I am sure that they will be useful to other Ubuntu users.

1. (Kubuntu) Kmenu > System Settings > Display
   * Log in as administrator. For display configurations see if the display matches your current monitor. If it does, then set it to a default/generic 1280x1024, save and exit out, then restart x by doing: ctrl + alt + backspace. However if the monitor listed isn't correct, see if you can select the correct monitor and then restart x.

If this doesn't work, at a bash prompt type:

# sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
this command will cause you to rewrite your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. make sure you select the correct driver, which 99% of the time it has automatically found it for me. I usually just press enter the whole way through the config process, but just keep an eye on what you are agreeing to.

Thank you again, Rich

PS This turned out to be my Blog instead of a bug report. I appologize to every one for the intrusion.

Hello Chris,
Sorry I could not answer to your message sooner, but I have been away for
some time.
Go to 'Request for Help' at the Ubuntu site. Maybe somebody more experienced
than me can help you with your problem.
     Good luck, Don
