Crash after klicking on "open file"-Button

Bug Description

XP_SP3, all patches,
Inkscape 0.46 lang=de, downloaded from >>http://downloads.sourceforge.net/inkscape/Inkscape-0.46.win32.exe<<;
installed to partition D:\, which is default for my programs; OS is situated on partition C:\ ;

Everytime I use clicking "Menu > Open File" or the "Open File" -Button or use keyboard "Ctrl > O > Enter", Inkscape crashes immediately, showing the popups "Runtime error! this application has requestet the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way!"
"Inkscape is to close now" (in German)

To emphasize: there is no file pointed out/marked up for opening at this state! Crash responds click/enter!

Starting inkscape.exe via commandline with "--g-fatal-warnings" - argument shows popup-window:
"Gtk-CRITICAL**: gtk_file_system_win32_get_info: assertion `g_path_is_absolute(filename)' failed aborting...", followed from the above mentioned..
Really cryptic to me. I am no PC-specialist!

The best of all: I'm able to open all files I want to with "drag 'n drop" !!!??

Would be nice, if there is a solution to abort this behaviour.
Thanks so far!

thank you for the report.

The file Import/Export dialog boxes have been modified significantly since the release of Inkscape 0.46. Would you be willing to try a more recent development build? These are available from :
http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32/

Dear Alvin,
just to mention: I was quite happy able to use a "stable" pushed version...
Have no idea of any inner coherences/relations in Inkscape-programfiles, so I won't say "no" to your suggestion -
but:
the crashes occur
>>not with "Import/Export File" !! ?
they come with "File > Open// Ctrl + O + Enter// 'Open Dokument' - button";
I can import files I want to without havin' any crash.
Alas, I will test those "hardly civilized, frontierlined on the edge of untamed future"- builds. Hopefully not to loose consciousness or drown by doing so...

Hm, I did it: installed "Inkscape21570-0906121805.7z"
I started it once, doing well.
Now, second time and more, when starting, it popups:"Inkscape found an internal fault" and has to close.... (free translation from German popup-Window).
So I can't start Inkscape at all.
That's my last dance with Inkscape, I think. Sorry - but to work seriously with this program seems to be impossible (to me). It really got my nerves...
Best regards, Dierk

Cannot reproduce this behaviour on Windows XP, Inkscape build 21570.
I have installed this build on drive D:, with the OS on drive C:, and it appears to be working normally.

It would probably be worthwhile to try to trap the error messages using the technique outlined at :
http://kaioa.com/node/63
This will involve running a small program called Inkscapec.exe from a DOS prompt, to allow you to see error messages.

Hello, Alvin!
Hm, I did it in the end.. So here come two files, one of them made me sit up, the other is my trial to start something per cmd-line, as you suggested me to do.........
(Not so off-tpic: I'm 54year old blacksmith, who learned a bit about iron and steel, can manage hammer and tongue,
is poorly painting with pencil... DOS-prompt?? cmd-line?? All the HELL!!!
For that old java runtime environment: I updatet it to the newest; have now to deinstall and newly install the inkscape-nightly and try out.
As I mentioned: unable to even start inkscape! Install on D:\"für Bilder"\inkscape\ ; System is running on C:\, and it is
>>XP_SP3<< with all new patches - not XP_SP3, as marked in that "hs_err-log"!
Thanks for your patience of job!(my is wearin' thin - I know..)
regards, Dierk

It may be objecting to the use of quotation marks (") in the directory name, or maybe it does not like the umlaut in the name für.

could you try installing this either in C:\Program Files\Inkscape\ or D:\Program Files\Inkscape\ ?

I'm back again...
did install on D:\Programme\Inkscape with same result as before. Then I installed on a WinXP-"tryout" on C:\Program Files\
and: it worked!
To mention the umlaut in ..\für Bilder\ : that is my program-path for all the image-editing software, I am using. There isn't one program besides inkscape, which fails that installation-path.
The quotation marks in the previously mentioned installation-path are Freudian slips, for I was working on the commandline before, to generate the two sent error-report files...the path is without them.
At the end I copied Inkscape into "Eigene Dateien/Bildbearbeitung/", which is a linked folder on C:\, but resides on D:\;
and, up to now, it seems to work...but: that ain't no good for a serious program, ain't it?
My question now is: why does inkscape partly negotiate installation on/into selfdefined partition/folder? Isn't it sort of
"bad usability", not beeing expected in just open source?
I do not know the difficulties to reach that aim, but am using GIMP, IrfanView, HugIn and others, who do not care...
Please, have a look on that behaviour!
Best regards, Dierk

Confirmed on Windows XP, Inkscape 0.46. I've just added an umlaut in the path (C:\Program Files\Inkscapeü\).

inkscapec.exe outputs:
(inkscape.exe:3288): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_bookmark_file_get_size: assertion `book
mark != NULL' failed
(inkscape.exe:3288): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_file_system_win32_get_info: assertion
`g_path_is_absolute (filename)' failed

With 0.47 (and bzr rev. 9084), the open button doesn't crash, but Inkscape launches with almost all icons replaced with a default X icon.

Changed in inkscape:
importance: Undecided → High
status: New → Confirmed
