Bug Description
I have an Asus M2N-CM DVI neat mobo with on-board sound. Since my install can no longer use the front jack to hear headphone sound. There is sound from the speakers though. I have changed the mobo bios setting from hd front sound to ac but no joy. I can only hear a faint headphone sound if I put the jack in the back of the pc where there is the mobo sound output. Moral of the story have to go back to 8.10. Any clues? Seems as if the jaunty does not recognize the hardware? I tried to get rid of pulse to no avail.

Thanks

It'd be great if you were to include the apport-collect information from before and after the system was updated. If you've already updated you could recreate the before part by using a live CD.
d.purpura@btinternet.com (d-purpura) wrote : | #7 |
ok I will use the live cd and see what happens or else re install am determined to sort this out.

It seems that after upgrading to Karmic you are still
booting a non-Karmic kernel. There may have been an
issue updating grub during the upgrade.
In a terminal run:
sudo mv /boot/grub/menu.lst /boot/grub/
sudo update-grub
sudo reboot
After rebooting, in a terminal run:
uname -a
Verify that the kernel you are now booting is of the
2.6.31 variety. It should look something like: "Linux bradf-home 2.6.31-14-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 16 14:05:01 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux"
Rod Zazubek (zazubek) wrote : | #69 |
I had this same problem as this on my new Karmic setup
with the same VIA VT1708B on a Asus M2N68 mainboard with
AMD 64-bit cpu. This was a new Karmic install not an upgrade.
My first big (very big) mistake was trying to use a front
panel AC'97 connector that came with my mini-tower.
Changing to a HD Audio connector fixed that so that I could
see that the headphone was dectected using a:
> sudo ./hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x1d 0xf09 0
command showed:
> value = 0x80000000
Next I played with alsamixer and when the Independ column
is set to OFF then the front headphone jack starts to work.
The column is off to the right on the alsamixer display.
But using GNOME ALSA Mixer and changing the Independent HP
check box has no affect.
@Rod Is this symptom reproducible if you use
linux-backports

@Daniel,
I went back to my original config of Independ ON
and saved it using alsactl. This caused the front
headphone jack to stop working again.
Then I installed the backports package and rebooted.
After the reboot the front headphone jack now
works correctly. No alsamixer change was needed.
Thanks.
I see that the backports package increased the
alsa driver level to 1.0.21 and added a new
parameter named Smart 5.1.
It looks as if we have a solution to this problem,
a least for Karmic. Could some others confirm this.
Rod Zazubek (zazubek) wrote : | #72 |
@Daniel,
But I have noticed some weirdness going on
after installing that backports package.
When I plug-in the front headphone jack
the Gnome master volume goes to zero.
Not the alsamixer master volume but the
sound preferences volume on the top right
hand side of the Gnome desktop.
I can live with this but it might confuse
other users.
Daniel T Chen (crimsun) wrote : | #73 |
The symptom that you described reads a lot like the volume-knob issue that
Takashi and I covered on the alsa-devel mailing list. It has been fixed
already and is available in the 20091105 stable snapshot (likely earlier,
but I haven't done a bisect).

it is because you turn on "Independent HP"
when "Independent HP" is off, audio through hw:0,0,0 go to both speaker and headphone
and when "Independent HP" is on, audio through hw:0,0,0 goto speaker and audio through hw:0,0,1 go to headphone
Simple mixer control 'Independent HP',0
Capabilities: enum
Items: 'OFF' 'ON'
Item0: 'ON'
