This is more of an answer, rather than the answer, I'm afraid, since the official version of Thunderbird 3 just isn't in the repos prior to Lucid, but you do still have options:

1) If you're going to upgrade to 10.04 when it's released, and are happy to wait a few weeks (29th April), or use the current beta version, you'll find that Thunderbird 3 is easily installed from the Software Centre then.

2) If you really need it now, in Karmic, and are happy to use a daily build of Thunderbird (which is named Shredder prior to official release), then you can upgrade using the Mozilla PPA:

In a terminal, type:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily && sudo apt-get update
If you then go to Applications > Ubuntu Software Centre and search for Thunderbird, you should find that it gives you an option to upgrade (to 3.0.5 at the moment; with 3.0.4 being the current release version)

Obviously each of these is a compromise solution, but I thought I'd mention them in case they're of use.

Thanks Marc. Meanwhile I searched some more and got this link (*sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install thunderbird-3.0 thunderbird-3.0-gnome-support)* from wojox. It worked like a charm: have now got Thunderbird 3 up and running and installed Lightning (that was actually what I was after)

Kind regards,

Jan
