Can not get numbered list to work

I can not get numbered lists to work.

My environment:
ubuntu 12.04LTS
unity desktop environment
Zim 0.54 (installed from ubuntu repos)

Bullet lists work fine as do the other features that I've experimented with so far.

I've tried many alternatives of combining a newline, tab, space, "1.", "help" including things like:
newline space 1. space "help" space return
and I never get a second line with "2." on it.

Using "A." or "a." instead of "1." does not work either.

I'm anxious to start using zim in earnest but really need the numbered lists to commit...

I just figured out that numbered lists were not included until v0.55 and, as I noted, I'm using the version currently distributed by the ubuntu 12.04LTS repos which is v0.54
