Small Circular Dots beside albums etc

Sorry if this is a dumb question but why do I have these round things beside some (but not all) of my albums? Most have a 1 in them but several have a 2. Don't know what purpose these "things" and if possible I'd like to have them NOT appear unless they're serving a worthwhile purpose.

P.S. Has the maintainer/owner of this app considered a forum for questions of this nature and possibly input from the using community? Just sayin :)
