Only Phonon audio showing on up to date Fedora 23

Asked by Alan

Would love to spend more time using this lovely looking player, but despite trying to ensure I have all dependencies etc. Yarock installs with only the Phonon audio back end enabled.

The build deps are WAY too long to want to build locally. I thought that having QT5 and VLC already installed would have given me access to VLC audio. Half my music collection is mp4. Presently, half my music collection is invisible to the player.

Any help or suggestions?

the yarock package for fedora 23 was built only with the phonon backend.
http://pkgs.fedoraproject.org/cgit/rpms/yarock.git/tree/yarock.spec

I have built a rpm package from yarock with the backend vlc and mpv,
you can download it from the following page for testing.

Oh, nice. Thanks :0)

Perhaps I've misunderstood something or I don't have correct deps, but I just downloaded and installed your latest build using dnf and terminal (it found the above version).

After installation, verifying packages etc. I opened it up but I still only get the option for "phonon backend" or "no backend". The options for VLC remained greyed out, thus the player still can't see about half my library.

Is there something I need to do at my end?

please try to delte the setting file with:
[martin@fc23 ~]$ rm -rf ~/.config/yarock/

check if the vlc packages are installed.
[root@fc23 tmp]# rpm -qa |grep vlc
vlc-core-2.2.2-1.fc23.x86_64
vlc-2.2.2-1.fc23.x86_64

then start yarock again, choose settings and select the vlc backend.

Done.

Vlc is installed, previous config gone. Restarted the app but no difference. Even the "debug info" on the default screen at startup (where you add library) lists just Phonon as backend.

what does you mean with (where you add library) ?

as soon as I open Yarock after installation (has always been the case, not a new thing) there's an overlay window asking me to name the music library, and a box below it where it asks to point to the music folder.

Can I attach screens here? Would explain better

So, not entirely sure where this leaves me? Do I have an issue with my installation here, or is Yarock still not fully compatible with Fedora 23?

i can't reproduce the problem on my physical and virtal F23 machine, it must be a problem with your installation.

Hmm, interesting. Obviously you can't do any more. This is a new, clean installation of F23 from a live USB. Install, dnf update, reboot. That's it!

I have no idea how to troubleshoot this. Do you happen to know whether, if I wait until F24 is released in June, that 'new' install might fix things? Otherwise I guess I'll have to live without your player - which feels a little odd.

Thanks for looking into it though :0)

you can't playback mp4 (video) files with yarock !

err... that's just the file extension. Obviously they're m4a - audio. But it's the wma and flac I'm also missing

mybe the codes are missing...

yup, got all those. To recap: I'm currently using a different player. I have NO issues playing music files - all codecs installed etc. I particularly wanted the cover art browser that Yarock provides so thought to give it a try. Have a new, up to date install, all deps (afaik). I thought using dnf would check all deps and download any missing anyway?

Fedora doesn't provide mp3-codecs due to some patent-related issues (more details here). So you should add third-party repository and install codecs from here https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Forbidden_items?rd=ForbiddenItems#MP3_Support .

Install also lame with:
dnf install lame

already done. Note: I have NO PROBLEM actually playing back music files. My specific problem is that if I install Yarock, and despite having all the dependencies, it is not possible to enable the VLC audio backend, and thus while my SYSTEM is fine with all music formats, your player is not.

Can you help with this problem?
