How to use the DFNFlowEngine

Asked by Huang peilun on 2020-08-29

Hi,

I am trying to simulation a standard penetration test on saturated soil. I've been told that the FlowEngine is restricted to quasi-static regimes and may not be suitable for the penetration test. Therefore, I want to use DFNFlowEngine instead.

However, I didn't find any instructions about DFNFlowEngine on Yade Documentation and don't have a clue how to use it. I'd be appreciate if somebody could show me some related articles or examples.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

In terms of articles, [Papachristos2017] from https://yade-dem.org/doc/publications.html#journal-articles should be a good starting point. I could not find examples in current source code.

From what I know (not much) from these engines, DFNFlowEngine differs from FlowEngine through the (additional ?) consideration of flow through planar fractures (fractures due to broken interactions), instead of a flow in the classical pore space. I do not know if there is a dynamic / quasi-static difference as well.

Thanks Jérôme Duriez, that solved my question.

Not much documentation on that engine - it isn't compiled in yadedaily or even the master trunk. That gives you some indication to the amount of support behind it.

However, I notice many people trying to use it on this forum, so searching this forum for "DFNFlowEngine" or "DFN" and other variations will yield some example scripts.

Cheers,

Robert
