frictionAngle vs μ(interparticle friction coefficient)

Asked by jamespaul

Hi,

I have the frictional coefficient of some granular material, and how can I convert this to frictionAngle?(Contact friction angle (in radians))

For example,μ=0·235

My formula is: frictionAngle=radians(arctan(0.235))

Am i right?

Thanks

I think you can try your equation on your side. Best way to learn.

I agree with Bruno. Self validation is crucial in our "world". Just print the calculated value and compare it to the expected one :)

Also, be careful not to mix up the internal friction angle of a material and the interparticle friction angle. You may be surprised...

Thanks Luc,

I'm recreating other people's papers. The author used open-source code Lammps. He used four parameters:shear modulus, particle Poisson’s ratio, particle density, interparticle friction coefficient. This should be the simplest material.I lack knowledge of physics. The result of my simulation is somewhat different from that of the paper. So I suspect I have a problem converting the Angle of friction.

I will really appreciate your concern.

James

Hi Luc,

Could you give some comments on the main difference between the internal friction angle of material and the interparticle friction angle?
I couldn't find this information on the Yade.
Or could you share some links with me for more detailed information?

Cheers,
Chien-Cheng
