Turning the screen on / off automatically

Asked by Kash

Hello guys,

I'd like to set all my signage screens (some projectors and some LCDs) to turn off and on automatically. I think I saw a suggestion to use a third-party tool for this somewhere but can't find it now. Will there be an option in Xibo to sleep and wake the PC, if not can you suggest a reliable third-party app to do this please?

Thanks in advance chaps.

I use nircmd to do this....

There are some instructions here:
http://www.online-tech-tips.com/computer-tips/free-command-line-tool/

You can download the tool from here:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/nircmd.html

I have it set to turn off the monitors at 7pm and back on again at 7am.

Cheers,
Nate

Oh, forgot to add... I was experimenting with going into standby and then waking again... and that functionality did work... however, the problem I ran into was that the presentation (the way I'm using Xibo currently is having it just loop a powerpoint) would sometimes freeze once the system came back out of standby. It wasn't consistant, so I decided to just go with turning off the monitor since that eats the majority of power anyway.

If you want to play around with it, I was using this software to do it:

Hi Kash

What I do is setup a scheduled task to shut the PC down at 11pm and then set a BIOS timer to wake the PC up again in the morning.

Xibo will probably get options to shut the PC down and to send commands over RS232 in the future. The linux implementation might also support sending sleep/wake commands over HDMI in the future as it's not that hard to do - but much harder on Windows as far as I can tell.

Alex: Have you found issues similar to what I mentioned regarding freeze-ups upon waking from stand-by?

(The only reason I was using the wosb application is because the client being used doesn't support a bios wake time.)

Thanks,
Nate

Hi Nate

I don't do a Standby. I do a full shutdown.

Hi Alex,

Thanks for the suggestion, a BIOS wake up would have been ideal but unfortunately not supported by my BIOS either. It seems a shame to have to use different apps for wake up and standby, ideally we just want to turn the monitor off, the PC can stay on if it gets too invloved to sleep/wake it.

I'm still looking for the best way to turn my projectors off so we look forward to RS232 control. In the mean time I will continue to play about with the apps suggested by Nate. If you have any further suggestions please let me know.

An old thread i know, i also see a low priority item in the blueprints.

I'm looking at using projectors in empty high street stores that project onto a film or specialist acylic stuck to shop windows. I need to be able to shut the projectors down at scheduled times. (ie over night etc). Scala have it as an option on their interface via RS232. But looking at using Xibo. I can do it using additional software on the Client PC, but would prefer it to be part of the template or display parameters.

I see in the blueprint you were exploring "on/off" template. I would be happy with just the projector switching on/off and the client PC running permanently at the moment.

Has anymore thought been given to this?

Dom

It has come up in our discussions a number of times since that
blueprint - but it hasn't been moved any higher up the stack for
development.

If you'd be interested in sponsoring the development please email
<email address hidden> - otherwise it will be implemented in due course (it
is something we are interested in doing long-term).

Thanks,
Dan
