Google Calendar RSS feed error "Can not displaythis feed"

Asked by d4n

I am using Google Calendar for our reservations in our establishment. I would like to use Xibo to display Google Calendar RRS feed but I keep getting this error message:

"Can Not display this feed."

Is there a way make Google Calendar feeds compatible with Xibo?

Thanks and keep up the good work!

Hi Danny

I've just had a quick look at a Google XML feed and it doesn't contain the standard RSS tags that we would normally pull out to display.

I don't think it's going to be possible to make a feed from there work with the current setup.

I've got plans in my head for a proper iCal module which would be alot more appropriate for this kind of use - which might support things like showing the current event and what's coming up next, or just a list of upcoming dates etc.

There's a blueprint already for it in the system here: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/xibo/+spec/ics-feed-plugin and a fuller description here: http://labs.xibo.org.uk/blueprints/Home/blueprints/ics-feed-plugin (ignore the bits about Java specific implementation).

If you've got any use cases to add, then let me know or put them on the blueprint whiteboard.

Cheers

Alex

I am considering offering donation to the xibo project. Is there are any way to set the priority of this plug-in to "High" or "Meinstead of "low" in the Blueprint section?

Thanks!

Hi Dany,

The reason the ICS plugin (maybe better to call it Calendar plugin) has not been looked at further is that it did not get targetted to our roadmap. We consider things "case-by-case" when we are deciding what to put in Xibo. In the recent past we have been striving for stability in 1.0 and core functionality in 1.1.

To assure you we do think that the iCal module is a good idea and are definately interesting in doing it at some point in the future.

We do have a system in place for blueprints that receive a "bounty" to be included into Xibo sooner (most likely the current stable release). If you are interesting in offering a bounty for this feature you would be essentially "sponsoring" a developer to implement this feature immediatly.

If offering a bounty is something you would be interested in doing we will need to extend the specification and agree an amount.

I have done this with limtations. In Googel Calendar If you go into calendar settings and go to the embed this calendar area.
Click on "Customise the colour, size etc". Once you have the desired effect. Copy the html code.
Create a calendar.htm file and past the code. Then in the layout link to the web page.
I have found that it does not work if you paste the code direct into embeded html link.
THe down side you can only display week, month or agenda

Good thinking. We know about the embed issue. Basically anything that uses scripts either needs editing or sometimes won't work at all.

There's a bug targetted to 1.0.4 which should solve the embed issue for the vast majority of people.

Not sure why you've edited this question which is about a completely different topic and destroyed the original question?

You've clearly found how to log a new question. Please don't edit old questions in future as it makes it impossible for people to search back through the answers collection.
