RSS Ticker doesn't show every feed

Asked by Johan Vermeer

I am trying to use a Ticker feed for mij xibo 1.6.2 and not every feed is working. Could anyone please explain to me why?
For example this is working:
http://feeds.rijksoverheid.nl/nieuws.rss

But this isn't:
http://feeds.feedburner.com/ComputableAll

In 1.4 every feed was working.

Also the text of a feed that I choose looks awfull:

Doesn't matter what font/color I am using.

Hi Johan,

What is it about your http://feeds.feedburner.com/ComputableAll feed that isn't working? I've added a ticker item with that source on a test system and it seems to pull the content in OK.

It is probably best to remain on 1.4 series if you are using XP. We can't fix the text problem at the moment, not until we replace IE as the rendering engine in the client (we are doing this for 1.7 series).

Although not recommended you can run the 1.4 client against a 1.6 CMS.

Thanks,
Dan

When I enter that feed address no text is showing.
Are you saying that when I am using the 1.6.2 client there is no fix voor de text markup?

there is no fix on XP - if you are not using XP then you can upgrade your version of Internet Explorer, which should fix the text rendering issue.

When I enter that feed URL I get the feed contents shown - would it be possible to provide a report fault log of the issue?

I am not using XP but a win7 client.
I just made a new ticker feed with these settings: https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1120x342q90/538/ClMmGk.jpg and nothing is showing on my tv, not even in the browser preview.

Also I switched the font color from the above RSS to black and now it shows good. But when I change it to red the browser preview also changed but on my client tv the text remains black.

What version of Internet Explorer do you have running on Win7? We have not seen problems with the text rendering on Win7 before (not that distortion that you are seeing).

"Also I switched the font color from the above RSS to black and now it shows good."

Do this mean your feed is working now?

First priority is getting it to work reliably in the CMS - if we can't do that part then we have no chance on the client side, because the client pulls its content from the CMS.

Can you confirm it works exactly as expected on the CMS?

Yes, the text looks okay right now in every color. I have no idea what happened because I didn't do anything.
Only I still have the problem that the feed from the above url is not showing and when I change the font color from the feed it takes about a couple of hours to display. Even when I restart de Xibo client and also I have the content interval on 30 seconds.

That's not really a big deal, it's only anoying for testing.

The main problem now is that the above feed is not showing.

Sorry Johan, I am confused :)

The feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/ComputableAll is not running in the CMS, client or both?

If its not running in the CMS then we need to try and get a "report fault" wizard showing the problem. The easiest way to do that is to run through the wizard but when it says "recreate the problem" open your layout in the preview and ensure the feed doesn't show.

I've tried the feed here on a local dev system and also a test system in the cloud - both are capable of running the feed which does rather point to an environment problem with your CMS host.

Thanks,
Dan

Hello Dan,

The feed is not running in the CMS and the client. Other feeds do work.
I have started this report fault in test modus and made this screenshot for you. Here you can see the upper feed is working and the lower is not.

You definitely don't have white text on a white background?

Nope I am certain about that.

This is basically the error:
Feed Error: A feed could not be found at http://feeds.feedburner.com/ComputableAll. A feed with an invalid mime type may fall victim to this error, or SimplePie was unable to auto-discover it.. Use force_feed() if you are certain this URL is a real feed.

Is the CMS behind a proxy or does it have a direct connection to the
Internet?

It's behind a proxy, I already put in the address in the admin console but that didn't work.

It seems to me like the proxy is preventing the CMS getting that feed. It
could be to do with some filtering at the proxy?

Can you confirm that the proxy isn't blocking the CMS getting access to the
feed?

My collegue has been looking at this problem also and got it working! :D

He switched between a lot of configurations and eventually got it working. We do suspect our network admin maybe did something, but we are not sure yet. It's weird that this config is working because that same config didn't work this morning.
But anyway it works and I'm happy.

I'm glad my feed is working only when I make a change on the layout it takes very long before my client displays this change.
Think of: direction of feed and font color.

Every other change to my template works immediately. My browser preview also works direct.

At the moment, it will take as long as the "update interval" to pull new changes from the CMS. You could lower the update interval while you are making changes and then increase it once you are happy with your design.

On reflection I think that behaviour is a bug - it should always pull a new copy of the feed if the layout changes. I've created and linked a bug to this.

I also think this is a bug.
No matter what interval I change, whether it's on the client, server or region my display isn't updating.
Also when I close and reopen the xibo client application the RSS layout isn't changed.

For now I have to delete the file on the client wich has the RSS content so it downloads it again from the server. I hope you can make this better in an update.
