Can't get wmv video to play

Asked by Kirby Bakken

I can't get a wmv video to play. It plays in Windows Media Player. Its in fact the default windows 7 video included with WIndows 7. I copy the default layout to a NewLayout. I can get a simple 'text' window to show. Here are the steps i took

Installed latest Xampp, setup users, installed Xibo, etc. Then:

1) copied default layout to 'NewLayout', did not copy media
2) chose NewLayout and changed permissions for all listed to 'View' and for xibo_admin to 'edit'
3) chose 'Design' and deleted all existing regions
4) added text region, put some text to it, saved order, etc. clicked on 'Preview Layout'
5) it worked.
6) went to Edit Timeline, deleted text region, then added Video.
7) clicked on +Add Files, named it 'wmv_video' set duration to 20, clicked 'Start'
8) Clicked on 'Assign to Layout', changed permissions to 'View', clicked on 'Save Order', then 'Close', then 'Preview Layout'

Black screen until 20 seconds elapse, and then a Play Again message appears.

In 'Library' tab I see the video I 'uploaded' and its ID number (lets say its 9). If I go to C:\XiboLibrary I see a '9.wmv' file, and if I click on it, Windows Media Player comes up and the video plays in a new window.

What am I doing wrong?

Wmv videos won't preview - you need to use a video format compatible with
your browser, so for most browsers it should be MP4 H264

OK, I had some success.... I created a PPT show and saved it as mp4 (one of my systems has Office 2013) and it showed.

Then I converted the wma sample video to a mp4 file, and it won't show. So for fun I pointed my browser (chrome) like this:

file:///C:/XiboLibrary/13.mp4

which was the ppt show saved as an mp4, and it showed in the browser.

Then I pointed the browser at my 'wildlife' mp4 file and it showed too. Then I pointed the browser at a wildlife wmv file, and it asked for permission, and then it showed.

But I can't get any 'real' mp4 video to play with Xibo preview.

In the past, I just saved the timeline, then scheduled it, then ran the Xibo player, and it would work (for ppt and pptx files), this is my first attempt at videos.... What is the usual way to debug video play with xibo? Is there documentation or something that I missed?

Thank you!

Kirby

You can put many different codecs in an mp4 file.

You need to ensure its H264 MP4 and it will work. If they don't then
converting to the Android Tablet preset in Handbrake should put it in a
format that will work.

Keep in mind the preview is just that - a preview. The client may well be
able to play the other formats - it's just that the Web browser can't.
