RSS Feed doesn't use region space

Asked by Barry Wood

I have a region at the top of a display (with other regions), measuring 1922 x 146. Inside it I have a BBC News feed specified (http://feeds.bbci.co.uk/news/rss.xml).

1. When the feed shows it only occupies a small width of the region rather than the whole region.
2. As I change the height of the region the text size (which I've specified as 22) changes smaller or larger.

I don't want the region to be so large it stops me having other regions, how can the RSS text be made to use the width of the region and not change size?

You need to ensure you have ie9 installed

Running the Server on Windows XP, which doesn't support IE9.

The server is irrelevant. The client requires IE9 installed and you need to
access the CMS with any modern browser - ie Chrome, IE10, Firefox for the
previews to work properly

The Server isn't irrelevant - it's where the design process takes place, and if the display doesn't show correctly (as it doesn't) it makes it much harder to design a layout that looks correct.

I do use modern browsers (Firefox on both client and server) but the OS is XP and Microsoft won't let you use IE9 on XP. This is the first time I've heard you use Internet Explorer for displaying purposes.

Xibo has always used IE to render content on the Windows Client - not all content, but some. It actually uses a control called "WebBrowser" which is made available in the .NET framework.

There have been a number of reports now that when XP is used (and therefore a max of IE8) there are issues with the Text/RSS scaling.

These need to be investigated in more detail - but we are dealing with an ancient version of IE here, so it has not been a priority for us to date.

Ultimately we want to replace IE with another embedded browser, which would solve our issues.

Barry the server OS IS irrelevant!

You could run it on an OS that IE doesn't even run on - like oooh say, umm,
Linux!

It's the browser you're using on the client machines that makes the
difference, and the browser you use to design the layout on.

Whilst I wouldn't want to be using Windows XP in a normal environment (although 10s of thousands still do), the 2 systems we use for Xibo are older systems that we are able to use. Their configuration of disk space, memory and CPU performance are adequate for displaying the Xibo content we want.

Having to upgrade both to Windows 7 is a costly exercise and would also mean additional memory, not necessarily expensive I know but pushes up the costs, so this isn't a way forward.

I'll look at reformatting both these systems to use Linux, which seems to be the 'cheap' answer to this issue. I'm no Linux man (hence using Windows) so that is also a risky route to go down (for me anyway).

Oh, Alex, I use Firefox to design the layouts on the Server that runs XP, never even think to use Internet Explorer whatever version. I use the Server to design the layouts because the client is busy showing the Xibo content so I have to use the Sever.

Yes Barry, and that's fine, but it's because the client runs IE earlier
than v9 that the RSS doesn't fill the region - hence my point that it makes
precisely no difference what OS the server is running on

If I go to a Linux system I see there are many different versions, is there a preferred version for Xibo to operate on?

Barry,

I really wouldn't recommend going to Linux for your display clients. It is a mine field for the inexperienced Linux user (I am constantly stuck myself, not with Xibo, just with Linux). Besides which, this conversation has gone entirely cross purposes....

As I understand your set up you have 2x XP machines, the CMS is running on 1 and the Windows Client is running on both - meaning your server is also your client on 1 machine.

We (as a project) need to make a clear statement about whether we support XP on 1.6 series or not. If the answer is "not" then our users will need to decide if the improvements in 1.6 are worth upgrading to Win7 machines. If the answer is "yes we will support it" then we need to find out what the problem is with IE8 OR replace IE8 altogether OR perhaps revert to 1.4 rendering when on an XP machine.

I will be looking into all 3 of these options this week.

This next statement is totally irrelevant to the problem at hand, but it really would be better to have your clients as dedicated clients and move the CMS somewhere else.

Barry, can you please try the patch in the attached bug? Also ensure your "updateInterval" has been passed before confirming the results.

Thanks,
Dan
