Ubuntu player for 1.6.0

Asked by joa hagner

I've tested several HW boxes as Xibo clients, an Aopen DE945pro with Windows XP, a Raspberr PI with Ubuntu 10.4, a Asus netbook 1215n with both Win7 and Ubuntu 12.4, a Minix 7 under Android as well as a Motion Computing LE1700 with Win XP. Most combination worked fine, just Raspberry and the netbook under Ubuntu did not work. Raspberry has just 512MB main memory, which is too small for Ubuntu 12.4. the Asus netbook has an internal hybrid graphics which is not supported by Xibo. Unfortunately all of the working combinations showed jumpy videos, text, pictures and especially HTML5 animations. Maybe with some tweaking this could be improved, but I think, the low performance of the underlying HW was the major reason for slow motion.

Now I want to test a HW with more power. The Zodiac ZBOX ID45 has an Intel Core i3 CPU and a Nvidida GT640 GPU. This is by far more powerful than all of the above mentioned systems. I want to install 4GB of DDR3 ram and a fast 64GB SSD. Before buying one and investing time (and money) into it, I'd like to get your advise. Do you think this HW is suitable to run a Xibo client 1.6.0 under Ubuntu 12.04? Does Xibo support the Nvidia GPU, even though there is an internal HD4000 build into the Intel chip? How is the internal GPU switched off and the Nvidia GPU switched on? Did somone successfully get this box up running?

Thank you.

Hi joa,

My system:
19" FANTEC TCG-3830KX07-1 3HE
FANTEC TC-SR20W
Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H, Z77
Intel Pentium G2130, 2x 3.20GHz, boxed
CORSAIR XMS3 DIMM Kit 8GB PC3-12800U
SanDisk ReadyCache SSD 32GB, 2.5", SATA
Seagate Barracuda 1000GB, SATA 6Gb/s
EVGA GeForce G 210 Passiv, 1GB DDR3, VGA, HDMI
Digital Devices Octopus Twin CI + DuoFlex S2 + DuoFlex CT2 (Mixed Set) - 4 Mixed Tuner Set
Intel PRO/1000 PT (for an IP-CAM stream witch is direct attached)
be quiet! System Power 7 300W ATX 2.31

The Pentium CPU was ok for the client, but I also have the Server on the same machine, wich was ok until i startet streaming with vlc at the same time.
So I would say CPU depends on your needs.
I changed my CPU to Intel Core i5-3350P, 4x 3.10GHz, boxed, and now I have enough power for 1920x1080p.

My problem is the video/audio streaming on the ubuntu client. this isn't really supported by xibo witch would be a nice feature, but thats an other question. So i solved this problem by cvlc and cronjobs at the moment.

Hope this is an usefull information for you.

Cya
