creating a user that can only add or update media

i'm trying to create users that only have permissions to upload media or update existing media. I've added the permissions that I THINK would be required to a regular user account but it doesn't seem to work. when they log in as that user they can get to the media tab, but they can't see any of the media that's already on the server. if I change them to a group admin, they still can't see it. if I make them a super admin they can see the list.

what permissions should be there for a regular user to be able to do this?

You can't update media on layouts without having permission to edit those
layouts as well.

so what permissions would a user need to do what i'm after? do I have to make them an administrator and give them permissions to everything?

It depends who owns the layouts and media items they need to update and
what the permissions they've set on the layouts etc are set to. An
administrator has access to everything, so would be simplest, but it really
depends on what the setup is

that got it! make them an admin, upload the video in question then make them a user again. then they can upload changes to JUST their video or media and can't get to anything else.
