Response is not well-formed XML

Asked by Matthew Fippard

Upgraded server to 1.4.2 and upgraded client also. Client would not retreive media from server so I removed the display and re-added from client options. When I click on register the result comes back as.

Response is not well-formed XML.

Display appears in server and will license but no media sent to client.

Xibo client info screen complained of 'Exception in Run' cannot find %appdata%\Xibo\Xibo Digital Signage\2.0.0.0\requiredFiles.xml.

Completely unistalled client and removed directories from %appdata% roaming and local and library location. Reinstalled client but %appdata% directory not recreated and same problem persists when registering display.

Is the client able to communicate with the server correctly?

The client appears in the server as logged in when running and has licensed correctly as far as I can tell just does not receive the media

Is the user the client is running as able to write to the indicated folder? And do those folders exist already? Does it do the same if you log on as a different user?

Yes the folders are part of the user profile.
There is only one user and is the same user that worked with 1.3. If I
deleted the folders the client re-adds them on next run so this is not a
permissions issue.
I have a second client that has the same error 'Response is not well formed
XML' but is not complaining of the missing file as I didn't uninstall
before upgrading. If I use a different user on this second screen I get the
missing files message because this user does not have the required files.
I'm pretty sure that this could be server configuration and not serving the
xml files correctly and not a problem with the clients.

Some screenshots to illustrate the difference

Screen with file missing error http://cromeracademy.org.uk/xibo/xiboclient.jpg

Screen with 'well formed XML' error only http://cromeracademy.org.uk/xibo/xiborunning.jpg

Neither screen accepting schedule changes from server.

Can you run a report fault on the server and see if anything I logged?

Also check your server key is as you expect in the server settings.

If I turn debug on to collect the info I can no longer schedule anything to the displays to reproduce the problems.
That being said the clients still exhibit the same behaviour.
I installed the client on a new virtual machine and I noticed that the unique key is not generated like it is in previous versions. The response when registering this new display is the same 'not well-formed XML' that I get from the existing clients.

To test the server theory further I installed xibo fresh on a test machine and the client added succesfully and retrieved media without a problem.

I am going to try on the production server by emptying the database and starting from ground zero. I have a backup of the database from the upgrade so nothing will be lost if I need to revert.

Reinstallation without using existing 1.3 database was successful. I'm still not sure what causes this but it is something to do with something in the database.

I have imported the media sections of the database file with no adverse affects so maybe something corrupted in the settings side of things.

It would have been interesting to capture the communication between client and server, or to see a dump of the log table. Its very strange for every XMDS call to be corrupted - usually points to settings, but that clearly isn't the case this time.

I can reproduce in a test environment if you think necessary but I needed
to get the information screens going again. Let me know if you would like
more info.

Hi, I have the same issue. How I can solve without fresh installation? Because I have a lot of images and designs.

Can you list out information about your system? the version, the type of client, when this started happening, a report fault wizard output of the problem occurring.
