Server and Client Differences

I'm wondering something. If i install ubuntu server may i use win clients? Or if i install xp server may i use ubuntu clients.

Other question is, may i use two clients are ubuntu, 3 clients are win xp, 1 client is win 7. Is it run? or i must install all clients same operating system.
