Remote client binary updates/upgrades?

Asked by venny

Just wondering if we have a capability in a
server to push binary updates (latest release
of the python client or .NET) to a remote
Player that is operational. This is to upgrade player to future versions without
Personally attending the upgrades at the client side.
Do we have to upgrade at the client side manually if there
Is a latest release?.

venny - we haven't looked into this yet because typically the server/client versions are matched - therefore upgrading the server would break the clients connections.

If it wasn't for this fact, I am sure we could design some sort of auto update for the server and for the client (click button in server, update, clients pull update on next connect and install) or something similar.

There is already a blueprint for this here https://blueprints.launchpad.net/xibo/+spec/auto-update-clients but as you can see it hasn't had any activity.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for the answering the question. How do people handle upgrades to the server and the clients today?. What is the best approach?. Manual attending to the upgrades at each location is little painful. The blueprint is exactly what I am looking for.

Thanks,
Venny

Most people upgrade the server, then upgrade each client.

At the moment the only way to do that is manually - but that could be via Active Directory pushing out the MSI or via some kind of script or using Remote Desktop or VNC. There's no need to physically visit each site but at the moment the client upgrade is a manual process.
