windows embedded player

Asked by Frank IJsseldijk

Hi, thanks for this very nice piece of software. I am using it for a few months now at home and maybe wanna start a service with it....
Is it possible to within the gnu-licence to start a service with it ?

Because LCD and player start integrating i found a nice LG-solution for the hardware.. The NC2000 player&lcd has a windows embedded player and i wonder if there is already any experience with this player? What small player can be used best? Linux or Windows based? Any suggestions are welcome!

kind regards,

Frank IJsseldijk

Yes, you can start a service (i presume you mean: start a small business delivering digital signage solutions), as long as you communicate (in writing) that you are not the inventor of the product you are using, and that the product is licensed under GNU GPL. Also see http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/selling.html

From my experience, the LG NCxxxx players are too expensive for most purposes Xibo is used, and apply more to larger corporations in need for a quick and easy digital signage solution (lcd screens and the lg digital signage pc's are pretty much plug and play). Xibo needs a full OS environment, either Windows or Linux. Most modern pc's, especially the ones suited for digital signage needs (i.e. intel atom based) can easily run any of both; then, it is just a matter of choosing the OS for your needs, Linux being open-source and free, Windows being license based (I believe a typical Win7 license goes for $75-$150 these days). However, if you've no experience in Linux, I would suggest first trying booting into a live environment of Ubuntu (preferred distribution for Xibo) to familiarize yourself with it.

Note that Xibo is not GPL licensed. It's AGPLv3 or later licensed -
which means you need to offer your server code base as well as the
client code base to your end users.

If you're starting a business, as ever it would be prudent to consult
a lawyer familiar with GPL-style licensing - especially if you intend
to make server or client code changes.

Thanks for the quick answer, here is what i intend to:

My customer is not interested in software at all, i want to create a website for him that is my own product for content generation and serve my customer with the complete solution (included original Xibo-server without any code-changes).

Also make the xibo client available to my customer without any code changes... It is nice as it is...
I can make that software completely available on my customers system, but he is not interested at all...

In fact it is possible to make a very small business from my own website of content generation and time spend on it.
I need to know what to do If it's not allowed within the AGPLv3 license?? or what to do to make it allowed ??

As i understand till now i just give my customer the xibo software on a CD/DVD and do no code changes.
As you suggest, i maybe best consult a laywer fo that.

Any further suggestions are welcome.

If you make no changes to the code on the server or client, then my
understanding is that you just need to inform your customers that
they're using AGPLv3 licensed software, provide them a copy of the
license and make available to them the source code - either as you say
on DVD or via a download link somewhere.

I am not a lawyer. If you want solid legal advise, you need to consult a lawyer.
