Multiple XiboClient's from one computer

Asked by Joerg Schuster

Hi,

I know the question 102979: MultiDisplay, but in our company we would like to use Xibo for Informations like "number of items", "Units build" and so on in our production center. So we have 4 Displays on each line but all of the displays should show another (slightliy different) Information. So, we would like to control all production informations in our plant.

With the Xiboclient we shows embedded Links from a Server, but the infos are NOT always the same on each production display. So we need 4 clients for 4 Display and for the hole plant, up to 20 clients for 20 displays...

Is there no way to start 2 (or more) instances from xibo on one machine?
Are there any plans for upcoming clients that have this feature?

sincerely, Joerg

You could possibly have more screens on 1 computer, if you divide your video output accordingly. Say, you have a graphics card that is capable of outputting to 2 or 3 vga ports at the same time, then all you do is set a proper resolution for the entire screen setup in both your OS and Xibo (i.e. just imagine putting any number of screens next to each other and evenly dividing the output of 1 computer to all these screens, say, dividing your desktop into 3 screens, each showing 1/3 of the total surface of your desktop). Then, in Xibo, design just one layout with 3 regions (in case of having 3 screens, of course) each matching the 1/3 of desktop space per screen. Note that you would have to add a custom resolution, as this option is not natively supported in Xibo.

Most modern computers have capabilities of outputting to more than 1 screen (mostly in the form of VGA/DVI/HDMI). If you are working with older hardware, a new videocard with a double or triple head should suffice. Also, from Windows XP upwards there is to possibility to extend your desktop onto multiple screens (proper extension, not just screen duplication). Linux Ubuntu has these capabilities as well.

My guess is that you're best of using double headed videocards. This would at least cut down the number of computers you'd have to use from 20 to 10. Remeber that Xibo does not have that high hardware demands if you are just going to stick to some basic layouts (i.e. without video). I've found that having a 1ghz CPU in combination with 128mb of internal memory is a workable minimum. Maybe there are still some old bangers laying around the office...

Hi,

I had tested it with our hardware, but no way. Our builtin Intel Cards didn't support this, and also our USB Manhattan Graphic devices. The cars supports to extend the desktop, but It's not possible to "lay" the xibo client over all 2-4 screens.

I would test this feature with another hardware.

Thank you very much for this great idea!
