Xibo and MP4 / MOV video's

Asked by Serel Snauw

Hi,

i already saw that i'm not the only person having trouble playing mp4 video's in Xibo.
I have the K-Lite codec pack installed, and the video's i'm trying to play in Xibo are playing fine in Windows Media Player (even without problems after renaming them to .mpg)

When try to play this video's in the Xibo player (upload works fine after renaming to .mpg or .avi), the video region is turning black without seeing the video :-(

Any idea what i'm doing wrong?

Thank you in advance for your answer!
Greetings Frank.

You're certain that it's Windows Media Player that's playing it. Not
another application with a similar name - for example Windows Media
Player Classic?

If not, try allowing Xibo to upload mp4 files and see if that makes
any difference. You'll need to edit the modules table in the database
to allow the extra file types.

Also what version of Xibo are you using. If it's not 1.2.2 then it's
quite possible that the client isn't able to download the video at all
because of a bug.

Hi and thank you for your answer!

I'm very certain it really is Windows Media Player (version 11).
Good idea to add the mp4 and mov extentions in the modules table, so i just did that.
But unfortunately it makes no difference when i try to play (the mp4 file) in the Xibo player. The screen stays black (even after deleting the cache).

I've just downloaded the latest "Biela" version 1.2.2
Again, thank you for your quick answer!

Greetings Frank.

Let me know if things improve after installing 1.2.2.

If the file has half-downloaded already then you may need to delete
your cacheManager.xml file before starting the 1.2.2 client to make
sure it doesn't try to play it straight away (ie before the download
completes)

Just installed 1.2.2 client (nice new bootsplash btw), and cleared the cache file.
Unfortunately no difference again..

Kind of running out of idea's, but thank you for your support!

Frank.

All we do is embed WMP. Does the video file play from the client library OK?

Yes, it plays from the library directory (filename 314.mp4). When i double-click on the file Windows Media player directly opens and starts playing the video..

Very strange indeed!

The splash screen will only show when there's nothing else to be shown because you're either missing media files or there's a problem with the layout.

In your case, I'm guessing you only have one layout assigned to the display and so when you change the video file, the layout becomes invalid (since it's not the same as the version on the server) and the client falls back to the splash screen.

Once your new video has downloaded, the layout will become valid and the client will start playing that layout again.

What you should be doing is having a default layout with just an image on or something and treat that as your last resort layout. You then schedule other layouts over the top of it so when you make changes, if there's no valid layouts, your default layout will always be valid and the client will show that instead of the splash screen.

Thanks alex,

Is strange, I tried new layout with only a video, and schedule VIDEO layout then do nothing. If I set like standar layout that VIDEO then appears splash screen.

When I modify standar layout with new picture I dont have problems, when client refresh it appears. If I set a video the client doesnt reproduce it, instead continues with the pictures.

It looks like the video layout is not valid, but I dont understand why.

I am having this problem also. It is affecting both MPG and AVI files. They will play from the library directory in WMP (not classic) with no problems, but are displayed as a blank screen for the duration of the video.

I do not have the splash screen problem though.

It seems this was only happening with videos that were generated on a Mac.
From the Windows side, I re-processed them using AutoMKV 0.93a and NeroAacEnc (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=113811) and they work fine now.

It is odd that they would play in WMP but not in the Xibo client, but at least I have a fix for my videos.

Can you help with this problem?
