Broadcom decoder

Asked by Edwin

Hi all,

Had anyone tried using Atom 1.6GHz (N270)+945GSE based signage player and have an internal Broadcom Crystal HD accelerator (BCM70012) and it works with Xibo Signage software?

And also, what is the playback engine in use under Xibo? Windows Media Player or KMPlayer?

Thanks a lot.

Edwin Teo

I'm considering this player for use. Need 1 video, 1 static picture and RSS feed only

Under Windows it's Windows MediaPlayer and under Linux it's libavcodec/ffmpeg.

I know people have used NVidia CUDA for video decode offload on the Windows client. I'm not aware of anyone using that hardware specifically.

You might be better looking at the box Bartek has been suggesting, Foxconn NetBox-nT330i.

Thanks. If it is Windows Media Player as the backend engine, then it should solve the problem. Will test it out with this ARK-DS303P box with Broadcom HD Decoder then.

The Broadcom HD Decoder will offload all the video codecs processing such as H.264/MPEG4....etc. via hardware decoding instead of software decoding. If using Atom onboard GPU, the 945GSE, without using the Broadcom HD Decoder, it will definitely only software decode video format such as H.264, and this is rather resource intensive and it will consume much of the Atom CPU processing power, resulting in the entire system to run far slower.

The Foxconn Netbox-NT330i is a rather good product, but I need industrial grade unit, not commercial grade. Intel had decided to phase out the Atom Dual core 330 in Q2 2010. Nvidia ION is also not committed by nVidia to be of long-term production supply. For industrial applications, long-term production supply is preferred.

Moreover, many of the solid state capacitors on board are X7R, which are far more durable than the Y5V type. Can see from the cap on board.

Thanks though:)

Once tested, will update on the outcome:)

That's exactly what nVidia CUDA/VDPAU does.

Personally I find the Intel 945 series chipsets to be seriously underpowered for even basic 2D work - certainly under Linux - but if you need something supported longer term then that may not be an option. Bear in mind however that we still aren't planning to do any major rework of the .net client - as soon as we can get the python client running under Windows then we'll be switching to that as the supported player, at which point Windows Media Player will be out of the picture.
