Updating files in library doesn't update in layout

Asked by mrfeet

Not sure if I'm missing something obvious but here goes:

I've added a powerpoint show to the library called 'show1'. I've then added it to a region in the layout. All is being transferred fine to the client and displaying nicely. I now want to update the file in the library so that the new file is displayed on the clients, to do this I've gone to the file in the library, selected edit, uploaded a new file and clicked save, making sure that it's name is still 'show1'. However the new file isn't displayed on either the client or in the layout view. The only way I can get around it is to go in to the layout view and edit the region the powerpoint is being shown in and pick the same file from the library named 'show1' and click apply, when doing this also it adds a new entry to the timeline so I have now have two entries on the time line and I have to delete the old one.

It's as if xibo when editing a file in the library is adding a new record rather then editing an existing record in the database and the layout doesn't know to reference this new entry.

Is there a way around this, is it a bug or am i just being a bit slow?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

That's how it's intended to work.

Basically when you upload a new version of a file, it retires the old version and creates a new file with the same name. The layouts using the old file will continue to use the old file until you manually update them.

If you want to upload a new file and replace it in to a layout in one step, edit the layout, click on the PowerPoint item and then upload the new version there.

One quick question sorry, are there any plans to implement the ability to override files in the central library? I just ask because I'm in a situation where i have 15 different screens each requiring a layout unique to them, but within this layout I want to share some common data (a pps) which is updated daily. As things stand I'll have to go into each of the layouts and update the pps for each layout rather than update a file in a single location? I know I could create a single layout containing the pps and schedule it so it displayed interleaving with the default layout for the display but unfortunatly it's not what my bosses want.

cheers

Have a look at the content streams blueprint. It should do what you want.
