Win 7 64-bit help needed.

Asked by Shahid

Install went ok as seen here:
https://answers.launchpad.net/xibo/+question/77352

We're currently on 1.0.3, I plan on updating to the latest and greatest post-semester (mid May).

I've run into an issue with flash content. Any Flash item in a layout will not play. Upon exiting the player, a debug message comes up basically stating that "flash.ocx" doesn't exist in this version of windows. Now, I'm *guessing* that the Xibo player is trying to use the 64-bit version of IE that's installed instead of the 32-bit version that has Flash installed. (there's no x64 flash yet). Any ideas on possibility of forcing Xibo to use 32bit IE?

As usual, thanks!

(P.S. sorry if this is disjointed I'm hopped up on energy drink right now...)

Hmm, to play flash the .NET client actually uses the ShockwaveFlashObjects activex... I am guessing that this just doesn't work on 64bit.

To prove the point, could you try using Embedded HTML (I guess that was in 1.0.3) and manually embed a flash object yourself - just as you would on in a normal HTML page.

I have been giving some thought to switching over to using IE for flash for 1.0.7 as it does have one large advantage (transparent background). The downside to this is that we would probably loose the clients ability to detect when a SWF had finished playing.

Dan, first thing in the playlist was an embedded YouTube vid that I verified was functional on my XP test machine. For testing I placed 1 item of every media type in a playlist with all the other types proving functional.

Ah sorry, I thought you were using the Flash media type and getting an error
through that.

If you take your embed code and put it in a HTML file on the local machine
(64bit one) and then open it in IE does it work?

Nope, it happens with both the media type (aka file) and the embedded code. It does not work in the 64 bit IE.

Is there any reason you can't use 32 bit windows?

Most signage players only do that job. What's the advantage of 64bit in that scenario? Surely you don't need more than 4gb RAM!

My feeling is that we've said in the past that it doesn't work on 64 bit Windows (or at least that it's untested).

If you need it working then you need to figure out how to get flash running in 64bit Internet Explorer, or change to 32 bit Windows.

If we stop and spend a whole load of time on trying to figure this out then we'll never get the 1.1 series out.

@Shahid - I took a brief look to see if there was anything obvious that I was doing wrong and nothing jumped out. I'll create a bug for this so that we have a record of it not working. At the moment I am not sure what can be done about it, sorry.

Alex, our IT department is pushing 64-bit Win7. It's not a large issue if it's not supported as that just gives me a reason to stick with my current XP-based image for Xibo clients. I wouldn't even bother with the bug report. I was just hoping someone had an answer. Please take NO time away from 1.1 development (because I'm reallllly looking forward to the display group security feature in the dev release) for this as I figure it's more of an Adobe Flash problem than it is yours.
