no notifications with hp dv7

I am running xfce4-volumed on an hp dv7 running karmic. The multimedia keys correctly adjust the volume, but I do not get any notification bubbles. What can I do to attempt to diagnose the problem? Is there a log file? Or specific xconf settings to examine? Is there any way to get debug output?

I played around with the source and figured out (eventually) that xvd_notify was expecting my notification daemon to have capabilities that it didn't have. Based on that, I was able to figure out that notification-daemon was still installed after upgrading to karmic. xfce4-volumed requires notify-osd in order to output the expected notifications, but notification-daemon was running (even though notify-osd was also installed).

I removed notification-daemon and the problem was solved.
