The best way to do that thing you want is to install ubuntu with Wubi...
You have to do this:
while running windows you have to put the ubuntu cd, a windows will pop up, and you have to choose "Install within windows".
then you have to choose the size of the hard disk you want to give to ubuntu... it's good to have more than 15gb to be able to install things without having storage problems! and you will have to put a user and password (do not forget this password is very important!)
well after you choose the installation options... the install prosess will start and then your pc will restart
let the cd inside your pc, when the computer restarts a grub menu will ask you if you want to use Windows or ubuntu, choose Ubuntu. The first time you run Ubuntu, the instalation will finish, it is an automatic process.
when the instalation is over you will have to put your user and password (the one you have put before)

If you want to uninstall ubuntu then you go to the add/remove menu on windows look for ubuntu and uninstall it as a normal program.
If you like ubuntu after try it on wubi is going for a normal installation because you will have better performance after that.

Hope this help you!!
Bye
Pablo

Hi Siddarth,

first of all you have to resize your Vista partition with the specific tool. Here is the procedure (of course, the terms might be in a different language, according to the language you're using):
Click on the Start menu;
Right click on Computer and click on Manage;
In the left pane, open up the Storage category and click on Disk Management;
Right click on Vista partition and select "Shrink partition";
You should reserve Ubuntu at least 8-10 GB to make it work properly (of course you can make a bigger partition).

After doing this, put your Ubuntu CD into your pc and then restart (you should control in BIOS if the CD is the first item to boot, but in a recent pc there should be no problem), select the option "Try Ubuntu without installing it".
Follow the on-screen steps and, when you're asked to specify the partitions, select the one you've created by shrinking Vista's partition, and let ubuntu do the partitioning (if you want you can manually specify them too).
Wait for 15-20 minutes and that's all!

If you then want to remove Ubuntu, put your Vista CD into your pc and reboot: after choosing your language, keyboard, etc, go to System Recovery and select "commands prompt".
Go to this directory: X:\Windows\system32, and write "bootrec.exe /fixmbr" and "bootrec.exe /fixboot" (without ""). It should work.

Hope I've helped you out!

Bye,
Davide
