What is the current state of Wubi?

Asked by Oli

I'm one of the moderators at Ask Ubuntu. Some time ago we started recommending that people stop using Wubi. Canonical was saying it wasn't supported for anything past 12.04 (and still are, as far as I can see) and the general consensus has been that Wubi is dead.

We've had a thread pop up on our meta site: http://meta.askubuntu.com/a/7509/449 nd we'd like to redress or at least reassess the situation.

What's the current state of Wubi with Ubuntu? Does it work? When doesn't it work? Is it bundled on the ISO again? Will it be in the future?

Launchpad answers is not a good way to contact Ubuntu Developers.
Ubuntu-devel mailing list and or Ubuntu-devel-discuss would be a far better medium with faster response time.
As this component is part of installation images, Ubuntu Installer Team mailing list would be a good option as well.
