Can't download Wubi (Signal 15 recieved)

Asked by Omer Sanilevich

I can't start Wubi. I download fine... I switch the disk re-partition to 30gb and then it downloads. I click reboot now and it take me immediately to Wubi... Than the command screen comes up:

What does happen (with the command screen) is that it shows commands that are blinking to fast for me to read the whole thing, and then it stops after like a minute or two of blinking. The only thing I do get to read is that Ubuntu commanded some applications to shut down. in Ubuntu, there are over a hundred error messages. With the reboot and clicking ubuntu option it reboots by itself. I expect it to actually start up with no error messages.

I noticed on my last try that it said "SIGNAL 15 RECEIVED"... It also said that it's stopping Bluetooth and all other programs, and that its rebooting.

That's a weird one. You could try using 'nomodeset': http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 (wubi installs are covered in post #8, but if you see the grub menu, override it there (as in post #1).

If that doesn't work, then I'd suggest burning an Ubuntu CD and booting from that: select "Try Ubuntu" to try it without installing. The you can run the bootinfoscript (http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net/) and pastebin the result for a bit more diagnostic info.

I tried with the CD before I tried Wubi and it was still not working... command menus (except shorter ones) and you have to reboot your computer to go back to windows...

I couldn't find \ubuntu\install\wubildr-disk.cfg anywhere I searched for maybe 20 minutes I even ran a full computer search for wubildr-disk.cfg its nowhere...

Other than that, I ran the CD with nomodeset and it brought up a completely black screen... and I was wondering if you install from the live-cd will it reformat your hard drive or will it repartion (like Wubi does)

Thanks for you help... it means a lot :)

I did the quiet splash nomodeset option and it said
*booting command list (for like 2 minutes)
than it went into an UBUNTU 11.10 loading screen
than it said
*STOPPING BLUETOOTH
*ASKING ALL PROCESSES TO TERMINATE
than it restarted like it did the first time...

I also did nomodeset quiet splash
and the same thing happened as above but this time I saw a black screen with a bar on top with some type of wifi symbol and options symbol (this was seen in between the UBUNTU 11.10 and the STOPPING BLUETOOTH...

Okay if it says 'finishing the installation' then that's Method 1 (so no wubildr-disk.cfg). Try removing the 'quiet splash' and adding 'nomodeset' instead as shown in that post I mentioned earlier.

Note that the first time you boot after installing (when it says 'finishing the installation') it should reboot automatically after completing the install. So maybe the problem is you're not seeing the installation slideshow and it completes? Or does it reboot fairly quickly (less than 15 minutes) and then always show 'finishing the installation' when you reboot?

Just for your information (since you mentioned this), Wubi doesn't partition. It creates 'virtual disks' or virtual partitions instead. That's how you can install it in Windows. If you boot a live CD and select "Try Ubuntu" it doesn't install at all (or partition) - it boots to a live desktop (it runs from the CD). If you want to install to a separate partition you need to boot from the CD/USB and then let it install - or boot to a live CD desktop and click the 'Install Ubuntu' option shown on the launcher and desktop.

Oh one other thing - if you're installing from a CD and you're doing it WITHOUT an internet connection it doesn't run an md5 check on the CD. It's possible that the CD is not valid. So please pastebin the logfile from the %TEMP% directory so I can review it.

Where is this directory?

I tried replacing quiet splash with nomodeset and nothing happened...

other than that every time I start up Ubuntu, it says "finishing installation" and it shuts down the same way all the time (*STOPPING BLUETOOTH
*ASKING ALL PROCESSES TO TERMINATE)

I'm starting to wonder if Ubuntu will ever work for me...

Maybe I should try the USB (If it's any different than the CD I'm willing to try)

Also, since my house is very old, we don't have wired connection so I have a wireless connection from my PC but you need to start up a software thing first (which PC does automatically)... It's called Net Gear - WNA1100 - Wireless-N 150 USB Adapter.

Thanks again :)

Try unplugging all USB etc. and any other unnecessary hardware (only single monitor, keyboard and mouse). If you have a wireless keyboard/mouse try it with plugged in. Just to rule out some problem with hardware. Because there doesn't seem to be a known issue with your hardware.

The directory with the log file is the %TEMP% directory (that's an environment variable so you just type it in the address of windows explorer and it will take you to the right place). The log file is wubi-11.10-rev241.log (assuming you are running 11.10 from a CD). Just pastebin any file named wubi-xx.xx-revxxx.log.

The log files are fine - no indication of any problems. So I am basically out of ideas. :(

Maybe try a different release, or another linux distro - see if you have better luck. 12.04 should be out tomorrow. Or you could try the older 10.04. Or as I said, a completely different distro.
