Can't get Wubi.exe to run on Win7

Asked by TzK

After searching on numerous forums, I have exhausted all attempts to get Wubi to work on Win7.
I desperately need some help please...

So far what has been attempted the following:

1) Disabled my AVG Firewall
2) Recreated a "Startup" folder manually in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
3) Created a Binary String within Windows Registry
    (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
4) Deleted any files/folder created in %TEMP% & %TMP% that have "py... .tmp"

Yet when I run "wubi.exe, mouse cursor shows some activity of something happening and then stops.
NOTHING HAPPENS??? No clue what I am doing wrong...

Log within %TEMP%:

Oh I forgot to mention:

1) I download the "wubi.exe" from the Ubuntu official website:

    Wubi.exe - http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/windows-installer

2) I downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 from their website as well, and ran the ISO virtually and extracted the wubi.exe
    from there:

    Ubuntu installation CD - http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download

I also attempted trying older versions of the ubuntu ISO's 11.04, 10.10, 10.04

Exact same problem, wubi.exe simply no response...to running it in Win7

i recommend you download and md5 test the desktop iso and mount it with daemontools or magicdisk and run Wubi there (right click -> run as admin)

Ok did the MD5 test...no problems there...mounted the desktop ISO, and ran wubi as admin.

Still no solution...

I take it you are not happy with doing a full side-by-side install? This would avoid the need to use wubi...

I take it you mean creating a second partition along side windows and installing from a CD...

It crossed my mind...but here is my worry (and maybe you can provide some words of reassurance?)

The drive I have is a 120Gig SSD, with one partition (Windows 7 installed on it using about 70Gb).
Ideally I would like to install Ubuntu on that drive too.
I am however very suspect of programs like partition magic, as I have experienced problems in the past trying to create partitions on drives already having windows in particular installed on them.

I suppose if nothing comes from this wubi problem I might look in that direction, or even consider making space on another drive and try that route.

But being some what of a tech...I would like to find the solution to this problem.

I suspect it could be something to do with the wubi.exe not being able to make use of the start up folder.
As apparently it does not exist. I even created another Win Account...and tried within that account but same thing occurs.

Talk about frustration!

The log file is still complaining about the startup folder = None.

There's no way past that

Can you help with this problem?
