I put Ubuntu on a Windows machine using WUBI and it is slow

Asked by Rodney

I have Ubuntu and Windows 7 installed on a laptop as a dual boot system and it works quite well. I just now tried to add Ubuntu to a desktop using WUBI and am quite disappointed as Ubuntu is very slow on the desk top. Perhaps I should uninstall it and WUBI and go to a dual boot system. Any suggestions on how to make the WUBI version work faster or should I go to the dual boot?

Wubi might be slower than a normal dual boot if you are low on RAM. I've noticed that Wubi is slower on my older machine compared to a normal dual boot using release 11.10; however, on older Ubuntu releases there was no significant difference. On my main computer there is no significant difference running 11.10 with wubi and normal dual boot.

So I would say if you are on 1GB ram or less on 11.10, then probably a dual boot will be faster. Otherwise, if you want to use Wubi, try release 11.04 instead, or maybe 10.04.

(Sometimes Ubuntu might run slow if there are some hardware compatibility issues - there's no way of knowing whether that's the issue, but if it is then you'll see the same sluggishness on a normal dual boot).

Can you help with this problem?
