ubuntu installation with ntfs

Asked by Ketan patel

I have harddisk with 5 ntfs partitions. Currently i m using ubuntu 11.04 with wubi installation in windows. Now i want to remove windows 7 installed on my c: drive and install ubuntu. While ubuntu installation can i able 2 format c: with ntfs file system? I don't want to change my other 4 ntfs partitions. After installation how can i access them? Thanks in advance.

Because of the way you are running, you do not have low level drive access from within Ubuntu. The easiest way to fix this is to download a Ubuntu Live CD and run Gparted from it. This will give you direct low level access to the hard drive. You can also mount the NTFS drives from that Live CD to see what data is on what partition.

BE VERY CAREFUL!

You can easily delete the wrong partition, and you will not be able to recover that data.

I want to permenantly install ubuntu rather than live cd. IF I format only c: with ext4 and don't make change with other ntfs , can i access them and do not lose data?

You are trying to change a tire while driving the car. You can not modify a partition you are inside at the time. This is why you have to boot from the Live cd.

Once up, you will have to look at the partitions. This is because Ubuntu does not use "c:" to identify drives. Once you have identified the correct partition, you can delete it. Than you can install Ubuntu using the Live CD you are inside. And yes, once you have it installed you have full access to the NTFS partitions. However, they will be slower than ext4, so you may want to slowly consolidate them into one large partition.

Can you help with this problem?
