installed Ubuntu 11.10 Wubi installer off a pen drive it gets all the way to the end and then brings up an error message

'windows backend' object has no attribute 'iso_path'

any ideas guys please

You need to look in the log file - it's in the %temp% directory.

But as a guess I'd say:
1. if the pendrive is > 1GB then likely it failed it on the size check. You cannot install wubi from a usb stick (and it's not required as you can place the ISO and wubi in the same folder and run it from there). The reason you can't do it is that wubi thinks that anything bigger than 900,000,000 bytes is a DVD ISO. Also it copies the whole pendrive partition to your local drive before failing on the size check. This could be 4GB, 8GB or even more. Dumb but true.

2. It could also be an invalid md5 check.

Unfortunately the final failure message wubi provides is rarely helpful on its own, and only posting the log file will help provide the clues. (Since the logfile is large use http://paste.ubuntu.com/)
