Incompatible 11.10Wubi(tar.xz) & Upgrade

Asked by Glenn Miller

I wanted to install 11.10 via Wubi but downloaded 11.04 the day before as contingency. 11.10 Wubi failed three times in a row so I tried 11.04 Wubi which succeeded initially but when I tried to upgrade to 11.10 via update manager I had catastrophic failure the 1st time then after 11.04 Wubi reinstall I had another upgrade failure but only minor for LibreOffice indexes & Firefox flash plugin. I noticed the 11.10 Wubi I used was tar.xz based which is appropriate for Macintosh or other Non-Windows OS and the 11.04 Wubi is torrent based which is appropriate for Windows.

Someone asked earlier if I have 11.04 installed in the present sense - no. I had installed 11.04 two times then tried to upgrade to 11.10 via update manager which takes forever each time & highly prone to failure due to the tedious 1361 to 1466 updates. I had functional success the 2nd try except for minor errors with LibreOffice & Firefox and the lack of any post-upgrade cleanup of conflicting remnants which do indeed cause slow or erratic boot.

Someone else suggested I download 11.10 iso then place in the same directory as the Wubi which would then utilize the iso instead of the tar.xz. While this looks good on paper, I have to ask if anyone has ever done this with any success.

I'm much more interested in a torrent based 11.10 Wubi if & when available. Windows 7 is my primary OS and will remain so until I'm more comfortable using Ubuntu. Even then, Windows will remain as secondary. In all cases, its Wubi or Bust.

I need to know if the current 11.10 Wubi is tar or torrent based. I'm not willing to risk opening as the 1st thing it will do is wipe out the last Wubi Install&Upgrade - I've already been through five installs in the last 24 hours and need to do other things until I can get a reasonable answer. Please help by trying out the current Wubi to see what kind it is - tar or torrent. Tar is normally compatible for
Apple Mac or other Non-Windows OS, while Torrent is more appropriate for Windows(what I got).

So you have Natty installed and want to upgrade to Oneiric?

You can't upgrade a wubi install from the tar.xz image. This is a 'preinstalled' new installation that is expanded on to the virtual disk. So it will replace completely whatever you have on the 11.04 install.

The only way to upgrade a Wubi install is via the Update Manager or using the alternate CD (I recommend the latter because - around release time - trying to do it through the update manager will take a long time).

If you just want a fresh install, Wubi will download the tar.xz image and expand it itself. You can't do this manually as there are other processes involved. If you want to you can download the 11.10 desktop CD ISO yourself and place it in the same directory as Wubi.exe and it will use that instead of downloading the tar.xz image.

Download the oneiric desktop iso. MD5 test then install magicdisk in windows. Mount the ISO in magicdisk and you can install ubuntu via wubi from there. I recommend you make sure all data is backed up from you old install and then uninstall wubi so that you have a clean slate to work with. Should be fine.
