Try (hd0, 1): NTFS5: error: "prefix" is not set.

Asked by Dale Meier

I have a dual boot with the new Natty 11.04 and Windows 7. It has been working fine for 2 days without any errors. Last night I did my usual update manager to Ubuntu before going to bed. this morning when choosing to boot Ubuntu I get the following message.

try (hd0, 0) : NTFS5: no wubildr
try (hd0,1) : NTFS5: error: "prefix" is not set

then after waiting 5 min this appears...

error: no such device:/ubuntu/disk/root.disk.

then after waiting another 5 min this appears...

error: no such device:/ubuntu/install/boot/grub/grub.cfg.

then i wait another 5 min it changes screen and this appears...

GNU GRUB version 1.99 rcl-13ubuntu3
Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. for the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. anywhere else TAB list device or file completions.
grub> _

this stays on the screen for quite a awhile...

Anyways I really hope someone is familier with this issue, and can guide me to a solution. I am worried as I have many important photos on my hard disk!

Thank you for you time and consideration,

Dale

I hope I will not have same issue as you, as I just downloaded the latest kernel and have not yet rebooted!
As it seems you have installed via Wubi, I will redirect you to Mr ~bcbc.

Please refer to http://ubuntu-with-wubi.blogspot.com/2011/08/missing-rootdisk.html

The message about the 'prefix not being set' is innocuous (happens on every 11.04 wubi install on every boot).

Not sure why running updates would cause corruption of the root.disk (that's another issue I guess, but see if you can recover the root.disk in the meantime).

Thank you very much (bcbc)

I ran the check disk as instructed in Windows. I rebooted and it started the check disk for C. I went out to feed the dogs and when I came back Ubuntu was on my computer. I didn't expect that at all! I rebooted and checked to see if i could go into Windows...no issues. So now I am able to get into Ubuntu and windows without any flaws! Seems that check disk did the trick! Thank you again for taking the time to help me!

Cheers,

Dale

Great! And thanks for the detailed feedback. It's good that you didn't have
to recover them from \found.000 - probably means the corruption was minor.

I've been noticing a bunch of these issues lately - not really sure what's
going on Win 7 and Wubi (and I haven't personally experienced this on my
wubi installs), but I'll link this question to a bug report so that the
developers are aware.
