Installer Crashes # ubuntu 11.04

Asked by Deenadayalan

Hi,

I am installing Ubuntu 11.04 (i386) alongside my Windows 7, During Installation, I am getting an installer crashed message (when it tries to remove extra packages), but I was able to login to Desktop. How can I fix this problem?

I used Wubi installer for the same.

Downloaded Ubuntu desktop i386 .iso
Downloaded Wubi installer .. kept in same folder
And started installation.

My system info:

    Intel i3 processor
    500 GB HDD
    Also one GB graphics card

Syslog for reference.. http://paste.ubuntu.com/687107/

Deena

Hi Gurus/Geeks,
I have experienced this with Ubuntu 8.10(CD sent to me by Canonical) also my current Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.In between I opted for Mint 9XFCE with a smooth install but upgrades to Mint 10 and Mint11( basically Ubuntu Clones)
Install was aborted just before the Bootloader was getting installed .This may be due to a fault or bug in Ubiquity causing crash towards the close of Install.I don't know if it is due to my system ,AMD Sempron,!.5 GB Ram on a K8M-800M mobo.I dont think my system is very primitive since i have both Win XP as well as Win7 OK.My work around ( which i have already stated here as well as in Mint Forums) is to start with Live CD go to Synaptic and
install DEBIAN INSTALLER with its supporting pkgs retaining UBIQUITY.After this Install was quick and trouble free,no more Error POP ups about UBIQUITY crashing.I hope my learned friends would comment/correct me on this, for enlightenment of less informed users.UBUNTU O/S's which perform excellently otherwise should not be under-rated by this glitch.

Deena, you say that the installer crashes but that you can still login to the desktop. Do you have problems after that?

What brand/model computer do you have, how much RAM and what graphics card?

I can't find a problem with those specs. The best advice I can offer is, when it happens again, drop to a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and capture the full logs:
sudo zip -r /host/ubuntu/installation-logs.zip /var/log

If you're not in the desktop then Ctrl+Alt+F2 will also drop you to a terminal.

You could try the nomodeset override for your graphics card, but all indications are that it works fine with the open-source driver. You might also try the acpi workaround menu, just to get it installed. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132

Sometimes it's better to create an Ubuntu CD/USB and then play around to make sure it's compatible or to determine what workarounds are required.

Hi,

Sorry I couldn't get you... Do I need to reinstall and capture those messages..? Could you please let me know how to capture all the console messages during installation.

Actually I created Ubuntu USB and tried and got the same issue.. Wubi is bit easy for me to install/uninstall if there is any issue, so choosed it.

Yes, I was saying that capturing the messages might help. With the Wubi install the installer has a separate log, and you can use the command I gave to capture all of those and save it to your Windows folder (if you installed on C: then /host/ubuntu is C:\ubuntu).

But if the problem is happening when you boot an Ubuntu USB then your C: drive won't be mounted automatically (though you are unlikely to see the same message about uninstalling packages when booting a live USB (i.e. when you select "Try it" without installing).

That other link I provided contains some information on kernel boot workarounds and how to use them. I'm not convinced that it will help, but I guess it's worth a try - I couldn't find anything that indicates an issue with your specs that could point to the problem.

Finally you could try a different release - see if that makes a difference.

PS you marked this question as solved - I guess that was an accident so you might want to unmark that.
