Freezing during boot/installation with wubi on Win7

Asked by Rhett Nadolny

I am new to Ubuntu, and am very interested in trying it out. I am running:
Toshiba NB255 Netbook
Intel Atom CPU N455 1.67GHz
2 GB RAM
32-bit
Windows 7 Starter
NO CD/DVD Drive

Downloaded Wubi (for 11.04), then ran the installation until the final prompt to reboot the computer. Upon reboot, I chose Ubuntu as the OS. It seems to go fine, displaying the desktop image with several little windows coming and going with installation progressions. Then the "Welcome to Ubuntu 11.04" slideshow starts. At this time, the pointer icon is just spinning and doesn't stop. The slideshow plays manually or automatically, but never disappears and the icon never stops spinning, and eventually everything freezes.

Looked up some info that suggested I make a shortcut of Wubi, adding the "--32" argument to the Target field of Properties. I did this, uninstalled the Ubuntu I had previously installed, and tried again, using the --32 shortcut. Same result.

Is there something I'm missing? Does my system not support Ubuntu? What can I do to make it work?

The --32bit argument just tells wubi to download the 32bit version of Ubuntu, and is unlikely to make a difference to your problem. There are some issues with Toshiba and Ubuntu. Some people have had better luck with release 10.10.

I've seen other comments referring to the kernel boot option: acpi=copy_dsdt ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/647358 ) - I don't know if this still applies to 11.04

I'd also recommend making sure you're running the latest BIOS.\

PS you can get 10.10 here: http://releases.ubuntu.com/maverick/
If you want Wubi you need to get the wubi.exe from that site (each wubi will only install a specific release).

Can you help with this problem?
