Fixing Recursive Fault But Reboot Is Needed

Asked by Mason Frey

Hello,
I'm trying to install ubuntu 11.04 alongside my win7 computer, and everything works great...until I first boot ubuntu. It starts the countdown to the final installation, and when the countdown is at 0, it pauses for about 5-7 seconds, then shows a lot of coding, and at the end, it says "Fixing Recursive Fault But Reboot Is Needed!" and stays like that. I tried downloading wubi with google chrome and IE 9, but I just can't sem to get it to work, can you help me?

P.S.
Here is my system info:
System Model: Toshiba Satellite L655D 64-bit
Processor: AMD Phenom II N660 3.00 MHz
RAM: 4GB
OS: Windows 7 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601
Hope this helps :)

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
Did you burn a CD, if so did you burn it as SLOWLY as possible?
Did you use Wubi to install the OS or did you resize the NTFS to make room for Ubuntu?

I used wubi to install my ubuntu alongside my win7, I didn't resize my NTFS(I have 346 free GB on my computer), and I did not burn a CD to install ubuntu. "Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?" How do I do that? I know I downloaded a torrent.iso file but how do I MD5 it?
Please respond :)

Instead of asking, why not websearch a little? You will easily find guides like this:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

It makes you more autonomous and will also get you fixed up faster as you are not relying on others to fill you in

OK, here's my problem, the MD5 checksums are different! How do I make them the same? I'll try to look around more and post another comment if I find it.
Thanks :)

THE REAL PROBLEM!!!!!
When wubi downloads the ISO file, there's a certain file that it doesn't write anything to(0 bytes, nothing), so it's just an empty file. Is there any way I can fix this?
PS
I've downloaded ubuntu several times.

Sorry, the file's called ubuntu, and it's in C:\ubuntu\install

I think you need a boot option: acpi=copy_dsdt

To modify boot options see: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 (wubi install is post #8). After the install you need to do it again (post #1) and then make it permanent (post #1).

Also, make sure you bios is up to date. If you have an nvidia card, then you might need "nomodeset" as well.

See this as well: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1805052
It looks like 10.10 would work better based on that thread.

Much easier is to download the ubuntu via torrents. MD5 test the ISO then install magicdisk or daemontools and mount the ISO (Windows is primitive and cannot do this without 3rd party tools). You can then run the wubi installer safe in the knowledge that the data is good.

Luckily wubi does its own md5 test built-in, so it's not necessary unless you are planning to burn it to CD. So any Ubutu boot problems on a wubi install are not related to a bad ISO.

OK, I downloaded the torrents from multiple sites, AND IT"S STILL CORRUPTED! This is getting very annoying >:(.
PS
I found out that the Toshiba bios corrupts the file :(

Can someone please give me an answer? Why are you abandoning the question?

I made some suggestions to update your bios and try the boot option: acpi=copy_dsdt
Also, I showed you a thread that indicated 10.10 worked on your computer, but 11.04 had issues (which may or may not be true and may have subsequently been resolved, but at least trying 10.10 would confirm whether that works on your computer or whether it's some other issue).

Unless you give feedback that describes what you are doing, what worked and what didn't, it's hard to come up with more suggestions.

Thanks

I just downloaded 11.10 alpha 3, and its been working perfectly! I guess 11.04 was just incompatible with insyde h2o bios. A little buggy, but its an alpha distribution so what do you expect.

I'm running 11.10 - it's not too unstable. However, you need to be careful - updates come frequently and in some cases there could be package errors, in other cases, legitimate reasons to remove certain packages. It's best to monitor http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=403 for issues and read the sticky threads in particular to prevent problems. It's not intended for production use so take appropriate precautions with your data.
