On a dual boot system want to increase disk space devoted to Ubuntu

Asked by Terri Main

I installed Ubuntu using Wubi which set a certain amount of space apart for Ubuntu. I'm using Ubuntu now more than Windows, although I still need windows on ocassion, but I could use more disk space for my Ubuntu applications and storage without having to always do a workaround by storing data, etc over on the windows section of the HD.

You can use this guide: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1625371

However... I think you should assess whether it's time to migrate to a direct install of Ubuntu. Some people choose to use Wubi and are happy with it, but the general consensus is that's a good way to "try out" Ubuntu. If now you're storing all your data on it, and using it predominantly, that probably means you are ready for a proper install.

The main reason for this is that your data - when stored on the Wubi virtual disk - is essentially a bunch of files within another single file (root.disk). This increases your risks of data loss - because if the root.disk is lost or corrupted then you could lose all the files within that. Whereas on a direct install, you only lose the files that are corrupted. If you have a rigorous back up system in place this is not an issue, but many do not.

Anyway - to migrate wubi see this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1519354

If you choose to stick with Wubi, then make sure you avoid manual poweroffs: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide#How_to_reboot_cleanly_even_when_the_keyboard.2BAC8-mouse_are_frozen

BcBc, Thank you. I think it is tine for me to migrate. I just didn't know how. I will look into these resources. Thank you. I really just need Windows for one program that I use at work and if I can ever find a compatible program on Ubuntu, I'll switch over.
