XUbuntu 10.10 importing files from Windows

Asked by Curtis John Goldsborough

Just installed XUbuntu 10.10 and am a newbie when it comes to XUbuntu 10.10. Is there anyway you can import or transfer files from Windows XP Pro Edition to XUbuntu 10.10? You know a heck of a lot more then I do.

How did you install it? Did you install inside Windows (using wubi) or did you resize your Windows partition and install a true Ubuntu install ?

When I downloaded XUbuntu 10.10 I burned The Iso file to a cd and used the cd. When it ran it Came up with the XUbuntu menu.

Demo and full installation, Install inside Windows and Learn more. I chose Install inside Windows. This is what it said underneath Install inside Windows.

Install and uninstall XUbuntu like any other application, without the need for a dedicated partition. you will be able to boot into either Windows or XUbuntu. Hibernation is not enabled in this mode and disk performance is slightly reduced.

I clicked on the button and it installed XUbuntu automatically. I have no problem with the program itself just need to know if there is a way to import or transfer files from Windows XP Pro to Xubunut 10.10

Since you installed Xubuntu inside Windows with the Wubi installer, the files in your Windows systems are accessible within Xubuntu inside the folder called /host.

Because the virtual disk Wubi uses is a single file (on ntfs: \ubuntu\disks\root.disk ) you should use caution when storing personal data on it. Make sure it backed up regularly - a good idea anyway - but important if you are using Wubi.

There's no reason to move data from the /host onto the virtual disk. It's safer on the host ntfs than in the single virtual file. It's only required if you need special permissions to execute programs or scripts etc. and even then there are ways of making ntfs appear to have the correct permissions.

PS Avoid hard shutdowns with Wubi. If it appears to be hanging refer to this https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide#How_to_reboot_cleanly_even_when_the_keyboard.2BAC8-mouse_are_frozen
