I can't log in to ubuntu 9.04 which I installed on a partition a few years ago, but wasn't able use due to dialer config problems. How can I reset it?

I installed Ubuntu 9.04 a few years back on a partition from a set up disc. Because I was unable to get it to work due to difficulties setting it up to use a dial up connection, I never used it. However I now have a better service and want to use/upgrade Ubuntu, however I cannot log in as I have forgotten what username and password I used. Is there a way to reset it?
Thanks Jim
