Installation deleted but ubuntu option is shown after reboot

Asked by Aakash Gupta

1. i installed ubuntu by hosting the ubuntu iso file on a virtual cd drive. I didn't use live cd option or usb. The installation went perfect. I installed ubuntu inside my windows installtion.
2. After a day or two, whenever i checked the ubuntu option after reboot it took me to a msdos type sreen of ubuntu. i couldn't do anything as i dont know any linux commands. I entered "exit and pressed enter". The info that i was that " no operating system found". This happened evertime i wanna run ubuntu.
3. So i deleted the installation folder from c:\ubuntu.
4. When i reboot now, ubuntu option is still shown in the list.

Please help in remove that installation completely.

NOTE: i have installed ubuntu again and during reboot i am shown the list like this:
windows
ubuntu
ubuntu

Did you uninstall the wubi install, or just delete the installation?

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide#Uninstallation

There's a section on manually removing boot entries in that link. It would have been easier to just use the built in uninstall (through Control Panel, add/remove programs) but you can do it manually as well.

I just deleted the installation as i was not able to uninstall it. it always asked for wubi.exe and i did point it towards wubi, still it didnt accept it and i could not uninstall it.

@bcbc,
one more thing you didnt consider i.e. i have 2 installations of ubuntu now. One is fine and the other one i deleted myself but it is still showing as an option during reboot.

It sounds, from what you're saying, like your problem is now solved. You couldn't uninstall one of them, so you manually deleted it. Is there still a problem?

That's not a problem. Just remove the entry for the Ubuntu system that you deleted yourself, and leave the entry for functioning Ubuntu system. (In Wubi, Ubuntu puts itself at the end of the list, so the older Ubuntu should be the first one, and the newer Ubuntu should be the second one. But to be sure, you can test it, and see which one boots successfully and which one doesn't, if you don't remember.)

Assuming you want to keep the functioning Wubi system, you should only follow the directions for removing (one of the) Ubuntu(s) from the menu, not the other manual installation steps. (For example, you won't remove any directories or delete the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Wub registry key.)

You should have used the Add/remove programs. Simply deleting the data is not sufficient. Its the same with any Windows application.

Can you help with this problem?
